CATCHMARK SPORTS GAME OF THE WEEK

Ravenna at Montague, 7 p.m. Friday

This is Montague’s homecoming game. Will the Wildcats be distracted? Or will they pick up where they left off in a dominating 33-7 home victory over Oakridge last Friday?

Montague, the reigning Division 6 state champ, has regrouped nicely since a 38-0 season-opening loss at home to Division 4 powerhouse Edwardsburg. The Wildcats have won three-straight games by a combined margin of 103-7 and they’re the only team in the West Michigan Conference without a league loss.

Meanwhile, Ravenna is coming off a 53-8 home win over Mason County Central in a game played last Thursday rather than Friday because of an officiating shortage. In Week 3, the Bulldogs suffered a 42-0 loss at Whitehall, but they bounced back in a big way against the Spartans.

The maturity of each of these teams will be tested. Can Montague stay focused and take care of business? Can Ravenna prove that it has learned from mistakes made against Whitehall two weeks ago and apply those lessons against a talented Wildcats squad?

The CatchMark SportsNet team will be there Friday night at Townsend Athletic Complex in Montague to livestream the game. We’ll also be tweeting updates and providing comprehensive coverage Friday night and Saturday following the completion of the contest.

ANOTHER BIG ONE

Grand Haven at Caledonia, 7 p.m. Friday

Over the summer, who would have predicted that Caledonia and Grand Haven would be meeting in Week 5 with first place in the OK Red Conference on the line? That’s the storyline for this matchup.

Rockford and Hudsonville are both 2-0 in the Red as well and they square off this week, too, as the Rams host the Eagles.

Grand Haven is off to a 3-1 start for the first time since 2014. A win here would be big in the conference race, of course, but even bigger for the Buccaneers’ pursuit of a playoff spot.

Caledonia is 4-0 for the first time since 2012. The Fighting Scots are coached by Derek Pennington, who took over after compiling an 88-43 record in 13 years at Zeeland East.
