Karli VanDuinen has been telling people that bowling is her No. 1 sport, despite the fact that she’s also a very good golfer.
On Saturday, she proved to be No. 1 on the lanes.
The Whitehall senior captured the Division 2 bowling state championship at Super Bowl in Canton. VanDuinen, who has signed to bowl at Division I Arkansas State University, shot 460 in the two-game final to top Wayland senior Bella Harnish (381) in the championship match.
VanDuinen rolled games of 235 and 225 to win going away. She was dominant the whole day, with the only scare coming in the quarterfinal round when VanDuinen edged Livonia Clarenceville freshman Caitlyn Johnson, 357-356.
VanDuinen finished third in the qualifying block with a six-game total of 1,236, then she won four matches to take home the big prize.
Last fall, VanDuinen finished runner-up at the Division 3 golf state finals. The three-time Greater Muskegon Golf Association golf tournament champion. She also won the GMAA in bowling each of her last two seasons.
