Last fall, something changed at Orchard View. It wasn’t just five victories on the scoreboard. It was the belief.
For the first time in several years, Friday nights carried a different feeling. Players expected to compete. Opponents knew the Cardinals weren’t the automatic win they may have been in previous seasons. Close games became victories, confidence replaced doubt, and a program searching for its identity finally found one.
Now comes the difficult part. Proving it wasn’t just one good season.
As Orchard View enters Year Three under head coach Aaron James, the Cardinals aren’t talking about rebuilding anymore. They’re talking about competing for championships.
“The players understand the expectations and what it takes to be good,” James said. “If we continue to work hard and focus on getting better every day, we should have a successful season.”
Last Season Changed the Standard
The Cardinals finished 5-4 in 2025, doubling their win total from the previous season while earning victories over Manistee, Muskegon Catholic Central, Fremont, Hart and rival Shelby. It was the program’s first winning season under James and a clear sign Orchard View was moving in the right direction.
More importantly, it changed expectations. Instead of celebrating progress, the Cardinals are now chasing something bigger. Winning seasons are no longer the goal. They’re becoming the expectation.
Experience Leads the Way
One reason for that confidence is the amount of talent returning. Orchard View brings back six experienced players who have helped establish the culture James has been building:
- Damari Wright (Sr.)
- Ca’Mari Reese (Jr.)
- Lawrence Spencer (Jr.)
- Kenyon McCauley (Sr.)
- Jaden Ross (Sr.)
- Corey McCain (Sr.)
Those veterans give the Cardinals leadership on both sides of the football while providing experience in the biggest moments.
James believes the team’s greatest strength will be obvious every Friday night.
“Our skill positions will be our strengths this upcoming season.”
With speed, athleticism and another year of experience, Orchard View expects to create far more explosive plays than it did a season ago.
New Faces Must Grow Quickly
Every successful team eventually replaces key contributors, and Orchard View is no different.
Several juniors are expected to step into much larger roles this season, including:
- I’Zavion Spears
- Xavier Bradford
- Qua’Marion Todd
James believes getting those players comfortable early will be one of the biggest keys to the season.
Along with staying healthy.
“Avoiding the injury bug and getting the new players up to speed fast.”
If those pieces develop as expected, Orchard View believes it has the depth to compete every week in one of West Michigan’s toughest conferences.
Confidence Without Complacency
It’s easy for a young team to gain confidence after a winning season.
The challenge is making sure confidence doesn’t become complacency.
That hasn’t been an issue this offseason.
“The team is coming along really well and understanding the hard work that’s needed,” James said. “We are also learning to always compete and never overlook anyone.”
That philosophy extends to every opponent on the schedule.
When asked which games stand out this season, James didn’t mention a rivalry or a conference showdown.
“Every game is a standout game. We don’t overlook anyone. We respect and game plan just as hard for every game.”
For a program trying to establish consistency, that mentality may be just as important as talent.
Another Tough Road Through the Lakes
The West Michigan Conference Lakes Division rarely offers an easy Friday night. Orchard View opens the season at home against Wyoming before diving into league play with road trips to Ludington and Montague, while also hosting Whitehall, Fremont, and Oakridge. The regular season concludes with a road rivalry matchup at Shelby.
One notable change comes in Week 6. The Cardinals will host St. Clair, a Division 4 program from Michigan’s Thumb, replacing Muskegon Catholic Central on the schedule.
It gives Orchard View a fresh challenge while adding another quality opponent before the final stretch of conference play.
More Than Just Varsity Football
The excitement surrounding Orchard View football isn’t limited to Friday nights.
The school is launching a new girls flag football program, another step in expanding opportunities for student-athletes while continuing to grow the overall football culture.
Week 6 could become one of the biggest days of the season.
When St. Clair visits Orchard View for a Saturday afternoon game, the school plans to host its Flag Football Championship along with a Youth Day, celebrating student-athletes throughout the district and bringing the entire football community together.
It’s another example of a program that’s thinking beyond one season.
Building a New Identity
Ask James what he hopes people say about his football team in November, and the answer isn’t about statistics or championships.
It’s about toughness.
If everything comes together this fall, he wants Orchard View to be known as a team that is:
“Hard nose, mentally tough, scrappy athletes. We will play hard and through the echo of the whistle for every play.”
That identity helped produce a winning season in 2025.
The Cardinals believe it can produce something even bigger in 2026.
Outlook
There is a noticeable difference between hoping to win and expecting to compete.
Orchard View has reached that point.
The Cardinals return experienced playmakers, have established leadership throughout the roster, and enter Year Three with a coaching staff that no longer has to teach what the standard looks like. The players have lived it.
Winning the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division won’t come easily, and reaching the playoffs will require navigating another demanding schedule.
But for the first time in a long time, Orchard View enters a season not trying to catch the teams ahead of them.
They’re trying to become one of them.
