Breakout quarterback from a season ago out of West Michigan, Cam Gunsell, selects Ferris State University to continue his football career. Gunsell currently attends Ludington High School and is gearing up for his senior season on an Oriole team with high expectations.
Gunsell is coming off a 2024 season in which he came out onto the scene in one of the most productive ways possible, with 48 total touchdowns and over 2,000 yards in the passing game.
Ferris State football, after last season, may be the most prized program in Division Two with yet another NCAA title. “It’s exciting to be committing to a program like Ferris State, but it’s always been in the plans for me, just had to put in my work to get here,” said Gunsell.
“I started to notice him as a potential college athlete during his freshman season. He just competes so hard! He also started to show some different types of skills as well,” father and Ludington head coach Charlie Gunsell said. “There wasn’t a moment where we said, ‘He’s going to play in college,’ yet a steady improvement in his game on both sides of the ball.”
Charlie Gunsell spent his college football days playing for the red and yellow as well. He was the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs in 1997, where he threw for over 2,000 yards. Cam stated that family ties were a main factor in determining Ferris State. “I’ve been going and watching Ferris since I was a little kid. My dad played there, and my brother goes to school there. Just been raised as a dawg.”
Cam has been a big part of the Orioles’ success the past two seasons, and a portion of that is contributed to how hard he pushes the rest of his guys in the weight room, at practice, and on gameday. “Cam has been great, making sure others are getting their workouts in as well. We have a great group of seniors who love to spend time together in the weight room and in our zero hour. He started to take that leadership role as a junior, but I have seen it progress this summer, and as we head into camp,” Coach Gunsell mentioned.
Ludington football as a whole comes into 2025 with a heavy dose of expectations, but there’s no doubt they have the roster to live up to them. “Goals this year would be winning the conference and the district, all while continuing to grow as a football player,” Cam Gunsell said.
