Two area teams stepped onto the big stage Tuesday night with postseason dreams on the line, each hoping to take one more step forward in March. For Muskegon, that dream is still very much alive after a statement win powered by one of the area’s brightest stars. For Hart, the season came to a close against a disciplined Niles Brandywine team that proved tough to chase down once it found its rhythm.
Muskegon vs. Grand Haven
If there were any doubts about Muskegon’s championship potential, Mariah Sain erased them in a hurry.
With intensity, purpose, and something to prove, Sain delivered a dominant performance Tuesday night, powering the Lady Reds to a convincing 54-28 win over Grand Haven in a Division 1 state quarterfinal.
The senior guard erupted for a season-high 34 points, including 22 in the first half, setting the tone early and never letting up. Muskegon’s energy was evident from the opening tip, as the Lady Reds jumped out to a 13-0 lead after the first quarter and held Grand Haven scoreless for more than 10 minutes to start the game.
By halftime, Muskegon was firmly in control, leading 27-9, with Sain accounting for the bulk of the offense. Her aggressive play, combined with relentless defensive pressure, left Grand Haven struggling to find any rhythm.
Muskegon extended its lead to 37-17 by the end of the third quarter and cruised the rest of the way. Dy’Nasti Bell added 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamiyah Ezell made an impact on the boards as the Lady Reds dominated both ends of the floor.
The win pushes Muskegon to 24-2 and into the Division 1 state semifinals at the Breslin Center, where the Lady Reds will face Utica Eisenhower. Reaching this point has been a goal for Muskegon all season, and now the Lady Reds have the chance to keep their postseason run going on one of the state’s biggest stages.
Grand Haven, which finishes its season at 23-4, was led by Mallory Woiteshek with eight points, while Georgia Reinecke and Kendall Gillis each added seven.
Hart vs. Niles Brandywine
Hart faced a tough challenge against a composed Niles Brandywine squad and struggled to recover after a slow first half.
Both teams opened the game with nerves, and the early minutes were sloppy as each side tried to settle in. Hart scored the game’s first basket after the opening four minutes, and by the end of the first quarter the contest was still close, with Brandywine holding a narrow 7-5 lead.
In the second quarter, Brandywine began to take control. The Bobcats slowed the pace, played with more composure, and turned strong possession play into a 10-point advantage. By halftime, Brandywine led 20-8.
Hart had difficulty creating quality scoring chances, often taking the first available shot rather than working for the best look. Brandywine’s defense made it tough to score, and its rebounding and transition game created even more problems.
From there, Brandywine maintained its double-digit lead for the rest of the game, continuing to play controlled, team-first basketball to close out the win and end Hart’s postseason run.
