District tournament play opened across West Michigan with several area teams delivering strong performances and building momentum heading into the semifinal round. Many of the early results matched expectations, but the opening games also reinforced which teams appear ready to make serious postseason runs.
Mona Shores Battles but Falls in Division 1 Opener
The Mona Shores girls soccer team saw its season come to an end Wednesday night with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Hudsonville in the Division 1 district opener.
The Sailors held off the Eagles for more than three-quarters of the game before Hudsonville finally broke through with 16 minutes remaining. That lone goal proved to be the difference in the tightly contested match.
Amelia Duff kept Mona Shores in the game throughout the night, finishing with 11 saves.
Mona Shores closes the season with a 10-9 overall record after finishing third in the OK Green Conference. Despite the loss, the Sailors showed the same defensive resilience and competitiveness that helped them build momentum late in the regular season.

Reeths-Puffer Advances After Strong Showing Against Cadillac
Reeths-Puffer backed up its strong district outlook with an impressive 4-1 victory over Cadillac in Division 2 District 19 play.
The Rockets looked sharp offensively while controlling much of the pace throughout the match. After battling through the difficult OK Green Conference all season, Reeths-Puffer appeared comfortable against postseason competition and now heads into the semifinals with plenty of confidence.
That confidence will be tested in the next round, where the Rockets will likely face district favorite Ludington. However, Reeths-Puffer already proved earlier this season that it can handle the Orioles, earning a dominant 7-1 victory in the regular-season matchup. Still, Ludington has built momentum late in the year, which could make this postseason rematch far more competitive.

Spring Lake Continues Strong Form Heading Into Semifinals
Spring Lake opened district play with a convincing 4-0 win over Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills in Division 2 District 21.
The Lakers continued to show the consistency that made them one of the stronger teams in the OK Black Conference throughout the regular season. Their defensive organization and balanced attack were on display again as they comfortably advanced.
With Fruitport and Allendale set to meet in another key district matchup, the bracket only gets tougher from here. The two teams did not face each other during the regular season, but both tested themselves against several common opponents. Fruitport finished 13-5 overall with notable wins over Whitehall, Montague, and Fremont, while Allendale posted a 14-3 record and picked up strong victories against Greenville, Sparta, and Coopersville. Based on their similar schedules and successful seasons, the potential matchup could be one of the more competitive games in the district.

Fremont, Whitehall, and Montague Carry Momentum Into Semifinals
Fremont, Whitehall, and Montague all advanced with convincing opening-round victories and now head into the semifinal round looking like legitimate district title contenders.
Montague defeated Oakridge 3-1 in a physical rivalry matchup, using a strong second-half push to take control after a tightly contested start. The Wildcats showed composure under pressure and now advance to face Hart in a semifinal rematch after the Pirates narrowly defeated Montague during the regular season.
Whitehall also impressed in a 4-0 win over Manistee, dominating possession and controlling the pace of play despite difficult weather conditions. The Vikings’ defensive unit completely limited Manistee’s offensive opportunities while Whitehall consistently pressured the Mariners throughout the match.
Fremont continued its strong late-season form with an overwhelming 8-0 victory over Orchard View, reinforcing why many view the Packers as one of the district’s most dangerous offensive teams entering the semifinals. Fremont also earned a 2-1 win over Whitehall earlier this season on May 7, adding another layer of intrigue to Tuesday’s semifinal matchup between the two conference rivals.

North Muskegon Dominates to Open Division 4 Play
North Muskegon delivered the most lopsided victory of the opening round, defeating Grand Rapids Wellspring Prep 13-0 in Division 4 District 53 action.
Now, attention shifts to Wednesday night’s matchup between Ravenna and Grandville Calvin Christian to determine who advances to face North Muskegon in the district semifinal round.
Ravenna enters the game with an 8-7 record and has shown flashes of strong play throughout the season, including wins over Shelby, Oakridge, Orchard View, and Whitehall. However, if the Bulldogs advance, the semifinal matchup with North Muskegon could resemble the teams’ regular-season meeting earlier this month when the Norse earned an 8-0 victory.
Calvin Christian lost 3-0 to North Muskegon earlier this spring while also matching up against teams like Muskegon Western Michigan Christian and Hopkins. Those common opponents provide a clearer comparison entering the potential semifinal matchup.
