Area Basketball Recap: Girls teams battle it out closing out the regular season

The final week of the regular season brought everything you want heading into districts, statement wins, season-defining moments, and teams proving they’re ready for March. Conference titles were locked up, underdogs delivered surprises, and clutch plays swung momentum when it mattered most. With the postseason just days away, these last few games weren’t just tune-ups, they revealed who’s peaking, who’s battle-tested, and who might be the team nobody wants to see in a win-or-go-home bracket.

Fremont 58, Manistee 36

Fremont delivered a championship-caliber performance Tuesday night, defeating Manistee 58-36 to clinch a share of the conference title and secure the program’s third straight championship.

It wasn’t a perfect shooting night — far from it. The Packers struggled from beyond the arc, going just 4-of-32 from three-point range and 22-of-80 overall. But what didn’t waver was their defensive intensity.

Fremont set the tone immediately, opening the game on a 14-0 run and holding Manistee scoreless until the 17-0 mark. That early defensive pressure dictated the pace and forced the Mariners onto their heels. By halftime, the Packers had built a commanding 27-12 lead.

In the third quarter, Fremont continued to separate itself, extending the advantage to 44-24 heading into the final frame. Even when shots weren’t falling, the Packers’ relentless full-court pressure created turnovers, limited second-chance opportunities, and generated transition looks. Their ability to defend, rotate, rebound and communicate carried them through one of their toughest offensive nights of the season.

The victory not only locked up a share of the conference crown, but also highlighted what has defined Fremont’s run of dominance — a defense that travels and a team-first mentality. Over the past three seasons, the Packers are now 35-1 in conference play, a remarkable stretch that underscores the consistency of the program.

With postseason play approaching, Fremont showed it doesn’t need a hot shooting night to win big — just effort, discipline, and defensive pressure.
