The nucleus of Fremont’s girls soccer team played key roles in the school’s girls basketball squad assembling an unforgettable season and capturing a district title in the winter.
Apparently, that group of Packers and the rest of their soccer teammates aren’t done winning trophies and making history.
Fremont edged Montague, 2-1 in an overtime thriller, to seize a Division 3 girls district soccer championship Friday night at Manistee’s Mariner Field. It’s the first district title for Packers girls soccer since 2009.
A goal by Packers junior Riley Chase with 5:34 left in the first overtime period broke a 1-1 tie and helped secure the hardware.
Fremont (15-4-1) advances to Tuesday’s 5 p.m. regional semifinal at Clare’s Brookwood Athletic Complex, where the Packers will take on former conference foe Howard City Tri County (17-7-0). The Packers beat the Vikings, 5-2, in a regular-season matchup May 3 at Fremont.
Tri County rolled through its district with a 9-2 win over Shepherd and 8-0 finals victory over Clare. Fremont powered past Whitehall in the district semifinals, 7-1, before facing a stiffer test against Montague (12-7-2).
Chase was a key player for Fremont’s girls basketball team, as was junior Mia Clemence, who got the Packers soccer team on the board for a 1-0 lead over Montague five minutes into Friday’s contest. Maddie Mater notched the assist.
Montague tied the match at 1 on a goal by Zaniya Meza-Wilson off a corner kick by Braylyn Bultema with 13:25 remaining in the first half.
Clemence picked up the assist on Chase’s game-winning goal.
Fremont outshot Montague, 13-9. Packers keeper Hailie Snyder made eight saves. Addison Pranger had 11 stops for Montague.
This was Fremont’s second win of the season over Montague. The Packers defeated the Wildcats, 9-4, on May 13 in Fremont.
Fremont girls soccer coach Steve Vissia also guided the Packers’ boys team to a district title in the fall.
