MONTAGUE — Friday night lights will not be returning to Montague’s Townsend Athletic Complex until September, but the football stadium has been abuzz all week with some special guests.

Detroit Lions Football Education returned to Montague High School for its annual youth camp running Monday through Thursday (June 6-9, 2022). Dozens of young football players, ages 6-14, were schooled on fundamentals and character-building by a group of Detroit Lions Football Education coaches led by Pat Sharrow.

Thursday night, 6-foot-10, 320-pound Lions offensive tackle Dan Skipper was featured guest at the Montague camp, which is one of 24 stops in 21 different markets across Michigan. Eighteen of the two-dozen camps sold out, according to Sharrow. Seventy campers signed up for the Montague camp, which went from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

According to Sharrow, goals for the camp are to offer a positive experience for children and parents as well as any coaches that are involved. He said the football side of it is important, as they teach fundamentals and want to build upon them, but character education is another piece. They hope campers take the skills, drills and lessons they learn on the field and apply them to the classroom, in the community and at home.
