Errors prove costly in North Muskegon’s district-opening softball loss to Kent City

RAVENNA — Seven errors proved costly for North Muskegon’s softball team in an 8-3 loss to Kent City during a Division 3 first-round district matchup Tuesday at Ravenna.

The Norse outhit the Eagles, 10-5, but miscues made the difference.

Kent City (23-9) advances to Saturday’s 10 a.m. district semifinal against Newaygo. Ravenna and Montague meet in the other district semifinal at noon. The semifinal winners square off in the finals at 2 p.m.

North Muskegon wraps up its season with a 20-12 record.

Here are details from the North Muskegon-Kent City game:

  • Kent City scored two runs in the second inning and three in the third. That was enough.
  • Kent City made only one error.
  • Jaycee Hoffman earned the pitching win for Kent City. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits with 14 strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.
  • Lexie Bowers went 2-for-4 to lead the Eagles offensively. The leadoff batter scored three runs.
  • Hannah Stellini doubled for Kent City.
  • Maddie Balon took the pitching loss for North Muskegon. She allowed four earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of work.
  • Balon also had a pair of hits for the Norse.
  • Rylee Cooper launched a two-run home run in the seventh inning for North Muskegon.
  • Audrey Brown was 2-for-3 for the Norse with a double and an RBI.
  • Baila Lang had two hits for North Muskegon, one a double, plus she scored a run.
