It’s that week, Muskegon-area high school sports fans.
It’s Greater Muskegon Athletic Association tournament week, and several West Michigan Conference schools will be competing across the various sports.
Here is a rundown of the schedules and notable info for each sport:
WEDNESDAY: BOYS GOLF
The GMAA boys golf tournament is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday (May 3). After being hosted by Stonegate Golf Club for several years, the event has moved to Lincoln Golf Club.
The low team score will win the GMAA championship and will be awarded a trophy. Top 10 individual finishers will be awarded medals.
Mona Shores is the three-time defending champion in the GMAA boys golf tourney. Montague, Whitehall and North Muskegon all finished in the top five last season.
FRIDAY: BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Mona Shores will be the host of the GMAA boys and girls track and field meet this Friday (May 5). Field events begin at 1 p.m. with pole vault and boys long jump, followed by the other events. Boys and girls 4×800-meter relay finals are set for 3:30 p.m.
Finals for running races begin at 6 p.m.
Last year, Whitehall’s boys dominated in winning the team championship. On the girls side, Montague pulled out the title with a dramatic finish.
SATURDAY: GIRLS TENNIS
Mona Shores is hosting the GMAA girls tennis tournament this Saturday (May 6). Play begins at 8:20 a.m.
Nos. 1 and 2 singles along with Nos. 1 and 2 doubles will be held at Mona Shores High School. Nos. 3 and 4 singles along with No. 3 doubles will take place at Mona Shores Middle School. No. 4 doubles will be held at Roosevelt Park.
Competing West Michigan Conference schools include North Muskegon and Whitehall. Fruitport, Mona Shores, Muskegon Catholic Central, Reeths-Puffer and Western Michigan Christian also will be competing.
North Muskegon is three-time defending champion of the GMAA girls tennis tournament.
SATURDAY: SOFTBALL
The GMAA softball tournament will be split into two tiers as has been the tradition. Here is the breakdown.
Ravenna is defending champion in GMAA Tier 1, as the Bulldogs defeated Oakridge 7-4 in the finals last season.
Tier 1 at Reeths-Puffer
All games for Tier 1 take place Saturday (May 6) at Reeths-Puffer. Ravenna is the top seed followed by Reeths-Puffer, Oakridge, Mona Shores, Holton and Fruitport.
