Hart’s football program made some more history Friday night at Shelby.

The Pirates’ 44-0 victory over the arch-rival Tigers marked the seventh time in eight years that Hart has seized the “Blood, Sweat & Tears” jug.

But here’s what the West Michigan Conference Rivers Division-opening victory also means for Hart:

  • The team is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 1978.
  • It’s the first shutout for Hart against Shelby since 1996. That score that season was 35-0.
  • When the Pirates take on Stockbridge next Friday at Olivet College — Hart head coach Joe Tanis’ old stomping grounds — they’ll be seeking their first 4-0 start since 1962.

Here are more details and notables from the game:

  • Hart scored 26 second-quarter points to take control.
  • Eman Hertzler got Hart on the board with a 17-yard scoring run with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter.
  • Joseluis Andaverde made it 14-0 on a 20-yard TD run less than a minute into the second quarter. He scored again moments later on a 12-yard run following a successful onside kick for the Pirates.
  • Hart made it 24-0 with a safety, then Hertzler got loose for a 41-yard TD run.
  • Hart led 32-0 at halftime.
  • In the second half, Andaverde scored on a 40-yard run for his third TD of the night. That gave Hart a 38-0 lead and set the mercy-rule running clock in motion.
  • Kyle Greiner’s 5-yard TD run capped the scoring for Hart.
  • Andaverde was an all-around standout for Hart. He ran for a game-high 169 yards on 14 carries and notched 11 tackles, including a sack.
  • Hertzler added 98 rushing yards on eight carries for the Pirates.
  • As a team, Hart piled up 395 rushing yards on 44 attempts.
  • Next up: As mentioned, Hart heads to Olivet College next Friday for a nonconference game against Stockbridge (1-2). Meanwhile, Shelby (0-3) hosts Ravenna (1-2) in another WMC Rivers Division matchup.
