Hart Pirates Season Review: Pirates Miss Playoffs with 4-Win Season

Program trajectory still on the rise.

A 9-2 regular season a year ago showed lots of promise within the program.

Joe Tanis has been at the helm for four seasons now at Hart. Tanis posts a 23-15 record with the Pirates and a playoff appearance a year ago. Previously to the Tanis era, Hart won 25 games in a stretch between 2004-2020.

Tanis coached at Northern Michigan before then taking the HC job at Orchard View.

It is clear he has brought forth a winning culture to the program in just four seasons.

Hart started its season off hot with a blowout victory over Lake City 40-0. Halen Boos got his first varsity start at QB after the spending time on junior varsity the last two years. The junior threw for over 100 yards and a touchdown.

The following week however, the Pirates faced its first WMC opponent of the season in Ravenna. The Bulldogs offense was firing on all cylinders putting up 29 points. After just a 2-point deficit at halftime, Hart would lose to Ravenna 29-6 and fall to 1-1 on the season.

Week three would then roll around and all eyes were set on the Shelby-Hart rivalry. The Pirates would continue its dominance over Shelby as they’ve had the past few seasons winning 38-6.

They would drop its next three games against Kent City, North Muskegon, and Mason County Central. This would put the Pirates at a 2-5 record heading into the closing stretch of the season.

Two blowout wins against Orchard View and Hesperia kept Hart with a fighting chance at making the playoffs.

Unfortunately for them they matched up against a 9-1 Central Montcalm team that has its eyes set at a state title. Freshman Kolton Rockwell would get the start for the Pirates at QB. Rockwell went 3-9 for 54 yards and an interception.
