Mike Mack honored with 2023 Greater Muskegon lifetime service award

Longtime Mona Shores teacher, coach and administrator has served district for more than 40 years.

NORTON SHORES — In classic Mike Mack fashion, he quipped that his golf ball doesn’t go as far these days, nor does his body.

The 74-year-old, longtime Mona Shores educator, coach and administrator is still going strong, however, as events manager for the Sailors’ athletic department.

During Friday’s Greater Muskegon Athletic Association track and field meet at Mona Shores’ Sailor Stadium, Mack was bestowed the 2023 GMAA Lifetime Service Award.

As the public-address announcer stated during the presentation of the award, Mack has been a mainstay and icon at Mona Shores for the past 40 years. During his career as a teacher, coach and administrator, he has worked in every building in the school district.

Mack is recognized for his success as a basketball coach. He coached the boys and girls basketball programs at Mona Shores. In 11 seasons as the Sailors’ girls head basketball coach, Mack guided teams to five conference championships, four district titles and two regional crowns. He is Mona Shores’ all-time winningest girls basketball coach.

The 1967 Mona Shores High School alumnus serves on the Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame board of directors, having led the group as its president until recently making way for Dan Beckeman.

Mack was born in Hart, where he grew up until moving and attending Mona Shores High School.
