Montague honors state championship girls golf team and track relay quartet

Watch the replay of the livestream to see those Wildcats groups celebrated.

Montague’s 57-44 boys basketball victory drew a nice crowd Friday, but it was not the only Wildcats team to draw big cheers from the home crowd.

State championship performers in girls golf and girls track and field had their moment in the spotlight, too.

Montague’s 2021 girls golf squad, which won a second-straight Division 4 state title, and the Wildcats’ 4×200-meter relay team were celebrated at halftime of the basketball game.

The relay team of Brooke Stark, Lauren Smith, Maddie Meacham and Natalie Erickson, plus coaches Terry Fick and Jenny Jancek, were celebrated first during the halftime ceremony. The 4×200 relay team ran a a school-record time of 1:46.2 to win the Division 3 state championship last track and field season.

Following the track athletes and coaches, it was time for the Wildcats’ back-to-back state champion golf team to be celebrated. First, Phil Kerr was recognized for being the state’s all-division coach of the year, then assistant coach Megan Brown — a golfer on the 2020 state-title team — received her championship ring. They were followed by golfers Isabella McKeown, Claire Meacham, Natalie Kellogg, Mackenzie Goudreau, Gabby Moreau and Orianna Bylsma.

The squad scored a two-day total of 675 at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers East and won by tie-breaker over Lansing Catholic to secure a second-consecutive state title.

Check out the livestream replay at the top of the story to see the celebrations for both groups of state champions.
