Montague relay teams double up in state titles in coach Terry Fick’s final meet (photos, video)

Wildcats’ 4×100 and 4×200 relays add to school’s growing list of state championships.

KENT CITY — Five Montague girls covering two relay squads did this for their teammates and for their coach.

The Wildcats’ 4×100-meter and 4×200 relay quartets both captured championships in the MHSAA Division 3 track and field state finals Saturday at Kent City High School. They sent Terry Fick out with plenty of memories as he’s retiring following 25 years as Montague’s track and cross country coach.

The 4×200 relay team of seniors Natalie Erickson and Maddie Meacham, junior Lauren Smith and sophomore Britta Johnson won the state title with a time of 1:47.10. Montague took first place in that event in last year’s state finals as well.

Later, the 4×100 relay quartet of Erickson, Meacham, Smith and senior Brooke Stark edged the relay team from West Michigan Conference rival Hart in a school record-setting time of 50.24 seconds.

Erickson also earned all-state accolades in the 100 (sixth) and 400 (fourth), while Montague senior Claire Meacham placed in the shot put in eighth.

As a team, Montague placed fourth in the state with 29 points. Hart was first with 63 points, followed by Pewamo-Westphalia (39) and Onsted (33).
