Norsemen Claim Championship in Gritty Battle Against Montague

The Champions…

NORTH MUSKEGON – In a thrilling showdown, the North Muskegon Norsemen emerged victorious over Montague, clinching their first championship on their brand new turf field. The Norsemen ended the regular conference season with an impressive record of 8-1-1, while Montague finished as conference runner-up at 8-2-0, with their only losses to North Muskegon and Fremont.

The Game

The match began with North Muskegon asserting dominance, netting two goals in the first half. Their precision passing and control of the ball forced Montague’s defense into tough decisions, leaving the Wildcats struggling to gain momentum. Despite the challenging circumstances, Montague demonstrated resilience, with some major “grit” keeping the match competitive.

One of the brightest spots for Montague was goalkeeper Robby “Stonewall” Smith, who showcased his resilience by saving three penalty kicks—one in the first half and two more in the second. Smith’s heroics were impressive, providing a glimmer of hope for the Wildcats amid a challenging game.

Districts

Looking ahead, North Muskegon aims to carry this momentum into upcoming district play, where they face a formidable opponent in Grand Rapids Wellspring Prep. On the other side, Montague will regroup and refocus as they prepare to take on Grant in their opening match of district play. Both teams will face off on October 10th, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting continuation of the season.
