MONTAGUE – The Norsemen entered EG Townsend Stadium with a 4-1 record and left with not only a 5-1 record but also the program’s historic 500th win. A blend of a potent offense, led by junior quarterback Bryce Colbert, and a stifling defense, made it a day Montague would rather forget.
The Potent Offense
Bryce Colbert was unstoppable. The junior QB put on a show, completing 15 of 21 passes for 240 yards and 3 touchdowns, single-handedly torching the Montague secondary. Colbert also contributed on the ground, rushing for 21 yards on 3 keepers. His leadership and playmaking ability were key in propelling the Norsemen to victory.
The Stifling Defense
On the defensive side, the Norsemen were near flawless. Over four quarters, they made two critical goal-line stands, both within two yards of their own end zone. Montague managed just one touchdown, unable to crack the Norsemen’s aggressive defense. #8, Drew Bartos was the defensive anchor, recording 10 solo tackles and assisting on 2 more. Bartos also quietly disrupted the passing game with 3 crucial pass deflections. He consistently forced Montague into long third and fourth downs, preventing them from converting key opportunities.
Montague
While Montague’s day wasn’t ideal, there were moments worth noting. The defense forced a safety in the first quarter and made several impressive third and fourth down stops, turning the ball over on downs multiple times. Offensively, they were able to move the ball downfield and earn favorable field position, though struggles to convert limited their success. Montague’s lone touchdown came courtesy of their ground game. Which looked solid throughout.
The loss drops Montague to 2-4. They will take on Fremont in Week 6 action. They will need a few solid weeks here to make the 2024 playoffs.
North Muskegon improves their record to 5-1. They will take on Ravenna in league action next week. Currently, the Norsemen lead the league and are looking to finish out on a West Michigan Rivers Conference Championship.
