Jerry Wiegers has big plans in his future as he heads off to Ferris State University to continue his track and field and academic pursuits.
Before doing so, the North Muskegon senior, or recent graduate, had some business to finish at the high school level. Sprinting is his business, and business was good at the MHSAA Division 3 state finals last Saturday at Kent City High School.
Wiegers defended his state championships from 2023 in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, plus he earned all-state in the 100 dash with a top-eight finish.
Wiegers ran times of 22.02 seconds in the 200 and 48.56 seconds in the 400 en route to victories in those events, plus he turned in a personal-record time of 10.94 in the 100 to place fifth in that race.
His PRs in the 200 (21.91) and 400 (48.24) took place this season in the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association meet and MHSAA Division 3 regional, respectively.
North Muskegon’s 4×400 relay team, for which Wiegers anchored, was disqualified at the state finals meet.
Here are other West Michigan Conference athletes who earned all-state honors at the Division 3 state finals:
Mason County Central junior Quentin Lange took fourth in high jump with a PR of 6 feet, 5 inches.
Hart’s 4×100 relay team of Eman Hertzler, Payden Stone, JoseLuis Andaverde, and Hunter Chaffee took fourth with a time of 43.35 seconds.
Hart’s 4×200 relay team of Chaffee, Andaverde, Lyric Fielder, and Chase Lorenz took seventh with a time of 1:31.24.
Notable: Montague’s 4×200 relay broke a school record in the event. The foursome of Devlin Dean, Talan Degen, Paul Olson, and Isaiah Atchison ran a time of 1:32.38 and finished in 13th place.
