Playoff Rematch with a Regional Title on the Line: North Muskegon vs. Menominee

North Muskegon looks to advance to state semifinal for second straight season.

MENOMINEE – A regional title is not the only thing on the line Friday. North Muskegon fell to Menominee last season in the state semi-finals, which gives this game an added sense of anticipation.

In last season’s state semi-final, Menominee jumped out to a 20-0 lead, but North Muskegon fought back with two straight touchdowns to bring them within six. The Maroons from Menominee then found their last bit of momentum, scoring two touchdowns and extending their lead to 32-14. The deficit was just too much to overcome with little time remaining, and North Muskegon’s undefeated season came to an end.

James Young, who previously went to North Muskegon and now plays for Muskegon, started at quarterback for the Norse in 2022 and 2023. With Young’s transfer, a window opened for junior Bryce Colbert.

Colbert emerged in week two against Shelby, throwing for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

These two teams have had their eyes set on each other since the playoffs were formed on Selection Sunday.

North Muskegon opened the playoffs against Evart, where they dominated. Colbert and Byard, the “one-two punch” for North Muskegon, connected three times for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

They would then face McBain in the district championship game. The rushing attack for the Norse gave them the edge last Friday. Cullen and Drew Bartos, the Bartos twins, rushed for close to 200 yards combined. The Norse came away with a 27-7 win and will now prepare for Menominee.

Menominee has had a similar yet different playoff path. In the pre-district, Menominee blew out Houghton Lake 62-6. Then, they faced Traverse City St. Francis, in which Menominee narrowly won 35-32, securing their second straight district title.

With a regional title and a trip further into the playoffs on the line, the Norse have a chance to avenge last season’s semi-final loss and prove they can make a run to the state finals. Menominee, fresh off a hard-fought win over St. Francis, will be looking to defend its regional crown.
