EAST LANSING — Montague’s Claire Meacham and Shelby’s Joseph Hayes have wanted to be on the Breslin Center floor. On Saturday, they got their chance.

Meacham and Hayes were among 32 seniors across Michigan honored during halftime of the Division 3 boys state championship basketball game at the Breslin for winning the Michigan High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Award.

Each school year, Farm Bureau Insurance awards 32 scholarships, proportionately by school classification, to students with 3.50 or higher grade-point averages (on a 4.0 scale), who have previously lettered in at least one sport in which postseason competition is sponsored by the MHSAA.

Meacham and Hayes each will receive $2,000 scholarships from Farm Bureau Insurance to be used at institutions of higher learning this fall.

Below is a video showing Meacham and Hayes during Saturday’s ceremony. Above are photos of the event.
