Shelby sophomore baseball standout wins CatchMark SportsNet Player of Week (May 27-June 1, 2024)

DayDay Garcia delivered with his arm and his bat as Tigers captured Division 3 district title last Saturday.

Shelby’s baseball team had its ups and downs this season, but the Tigers certainly had their moments and DayDay Garcia was usually in the middle of those bright spots.

This is another one of those moments: Garcia has been voted the CatchMark SportsNet West Michigan Conference Player of the Week.

Garcia won the Player of the Week fan poll after his big day in helping Shelby capture a Division 3 district title last Saturday at Hesperia. He received 2,737 of 4,864 total votes in the poll.

Ravenna softball’s Emily Postema was runner-up with 1,048 votes in the fan poll, which recognized six spring sports athletes from the conference for their performances May 27-June 1, 2024.

Garcia, a sophomore, came up big on the mound and at the plate in Shelby’s big day at Hesperia last weekend. The right-hander tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 4-1 victory over Hesperia in the district semifinals. At the plate, he had a double in the game. In a nail-biting, 7-6 win over rival Hart in the finals, Garcia had a run-scoring single and RBI double, then he retired the final two batters of the game to earn the save and clinch the district title for the Tigers.

Shelby lost to Benzie Central, 18-8, in Wednesday’s Division 3 regional semifinal at Kingsley. The Tigers closed the season with a 17-13 record.
