MUSKEGON — Veteran Whitehall boys track coach Kirk Mikkelson considers the West Michigan All-Star Invitational one of the top events on the Vikings’ schedule each season.
Make no mistake, however. This Friday’s Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Division 2 state meet at Berrien Springs is what Mikkelson’s group has been eyeing all season.
Top-ranked Whitehall fully intends on making a run for the state championship. That’s why the Vikings’ lineup during Wednesday’s 44th West Michigan All-Star invite was lighter than normal: They’re gearing up for the big one this Friday.
Watch a video where Mikkelson talks about the all-star meet and ensuing MITCA meet:
While some high school track coaches place a high priority on the MITCA state meet — for example, Hart’s boys and girls squads will be vying for Division 3 championships this Saturday at Clare — there also is the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals on Saturday, June 3.
Below are top-eight finishers for each event, boys and girls, from the West Michigan Conference during Wednesday’s 44th West Michigan All-Star Invitational. West Michigan Conference athletes performed very well.
