Fruitport’s volleyball team handed two White Lake squads tough, five-set district defeats in a matter of three days.
In Saturday’s Division 2 district championship match, host Fruitport edged Montague in a back-and-forth battle, 26-24, 25-27, 18-25, 25-17, 15-11. In Thursday’s district semifinals, the Trojans beat Whitehall in similar fashion.
It’s Fruitport’s first district championship since 2017, and the sixth for Trojans coach Nicole Bayle.
Fruitport (16-25) advances to this week’s regional at Cpmstock Park, where the Trojans will face Fremont in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Grand Rapids West Catholic and Ionia square off in the other regional semifinal at Comstock Park.
A young Montague squad closes its season with a 24-25-1 record.
Sadie Haase had 19 kills, eight digs and three blocks for Fruitport, while Auebre Johnson totaled 14 assists, 13 kills and 12 digs. Kayla Kolberg registered 44 assists and 41 digs for the Trojans, while Lauren Riedel had 16 digs.
For Montague, Britta Johnson led the way with 21 kills, six digs and a block. Laura Borras had 16 kills, 25 digs, five aces and one block for the Wildcats, while Anastasia Trevino totaled 11 kills, two blocks and two digs. Jaelyn Sundberg had 52 assists, 18 digs and seven kills, while Alissa Wynn notched 32 digs and two aces. Jordan Netcott had 25 digs and three aces.
