West Michigan Conference football roundup for 2023 Week 6 (Sept. 29)

Six weeks of the 2023 high school football season are in the books for West Michigan Conference teams.

Here is a roundup of Week 6 games that took place Friday, Sept. 29.

WMC LAKES

WHITEHALL 48, OAKRIDGE 7: Whitehall’s offense used a balanced attack and the Vikings allowed their first points against a WMC Lakes Division opponent.

MANISTEE 44, LUDINGTON 23: Host Manistee reclaimed the “Dad’s Trophy” with a runaway victory over arch-rival Ludington in WMC Lakes play.

Manistee improves to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the WMC Lakes. Ludington is 3-3 and 2-2, respectively.

Manistee junior Kaden Kott ran wild, finishing with 202 rushing yards four TDs on 15 carries. Nick Hornkohl had 97 rushing yards on 13 carries. As a team, the Mariners piled up 358 yards on 41 carries. Defensively, Braydon Sorenson led Manistee with 12 tackles and Hornkohl made nine stops.

For Ludington, Cameron Gunsell completed 17 of 25 passes for 208 yards with three TDs and two picks. In the running game, Manistee held Gunsell to minus-7 yards on 17 attempts. Joe Benz led the Orioles on the ground with 66 yards on nine carries. Gage Jones led Ludington with nine tackles, while Deric Duncil made seven stops.

Ludington-Manistee football rivalry is among the oldest in the state. The series began in 1895 and this was the 146th meeting. Ludington leads the series although it is remarkably tight at 70-65-11.

ORCHARD VIEW 32, FREMONT 13: Visiting Orchard View snapped a three-game losing streak with a convincing win over Fremont in WMC Lakes action. OV led 16-0 after one quarter and carried that into halftime. The Cardinals led 32-6 in the fourth before the Packers scored again.

Mason Tuttle had a big night for the Cardinals (3-3, 1-2 WMC Lakes), rushing for 182 yards and three TDs on 28 carries. He scored on runs of 50, 2, and 21 yards. Enrique Gutierrez scored on a 1-yard run for OV.

For Fremont (2-4, 0-3), Talen Reichert-Slater completed 11 of 25 passes for 109 yards with one TD and one pick. Khai Noordyk ran 15 times for 84 yards and a TD. Jacob Burns made three receptions for 45 yards and a TD. Connor Pettis led the Packers defense with 13 tackles, while Kyler DeKuiper made 12 stops, and Levi Wimmer had 10 tackles.

WMC NONDIVISIONAL

NORTH MUSKEGON 34, MONTAGUE 7: Host North Muskegon relied on its explosive offense and stingy defense in posting a runaway victory in WMC nondivisional play.

WMC RIVERS

HART 30, MASON COUNTY CENTRAL 8: Host Hart rebounded from its first loss of the season with a convincing victory over Mason County Central.

Joseluis Andaverde ran 20 times for 145 yards and one TD for the Pirates (5-1, 2-1 WMC Rivers). Connor Edwards had 77 rushing yards and two TDs on 12 carries. Eman Hertzler added 76 rushing yards on four carries. Edwards completed 2 of 5 passes for 74 yards and a TD. Defensively, Austin Martinez and Joaquin Flores paced the Pirates with nine tackles apiece. Ty Thomas had seven tackles and a sack, Chase Gale notched two sacks, and Edwards snagged two interceptions.

Pierce Bladzik completed 5 of 16 passes for 127 yards with one TD and one interception for MCC (3-3, 2-2). Quentin Lange had two receptions for 77 yards and a TD, while Eathen Huffman had four catches for 85 yards. Ethan Domin led the Spartans’ defense with 10 tackles, including a tackle for loss.

RAVENNA 35, HESPERIA 7: Ravenna got back in the win column with a road victory over Hesperia in WMC Rivers play.

Ravenna improves to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the WMC Rivers. Hesperia is 1-5 and 0-3, respectively.

SHELBY 48, HOLTON 6: Visiting Shelby recorded its second straight win, rolling past Holton in WMC Rivers action.

Shelby is 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the WMC Rivers. Holton is 0-6 and 0-3, respectively.

For Holton, Riley Pierce rushed for 93 yards and passed for 56 yards. Hunter Zang had 50 receiving yards and 25 rushing yards, while David Addison ran for 91 yards.
