Shelby rolls past Hesperia, Orchard View falls to Unity Christian.

Three girls district basketball openers involving West Michigan Conference teams were played Monday night.

Here is a roundup of the action from Feb. 27, 2023:

DIVISION 2 AT MONTAGUE

FREMONT 46, NEWAYGO 29: Jessica Bennett scored 16 points, Mia Clemence had nine and Fremont shook off a nervous start in posting a convincing win over Newaygo in a first-round district game at Montague.

DIVISION 2 AT ALLENDALE

HUDSONVILLE UNITY CHRISTIAN 62, ORCHARD VIEW 21: Orchard View saw its season end in a first-round district loss to Unity Christian at Allendale. Cambrie Hardy scored 10 points for the Cardinals, who close with a 2-21 record. Unity Christian (11-12) advances to face Spring Lake in Wednesday’s district semifinals.

DIVISION 3 AT HART

SHELBY 62, HESPERIA 27: Shelby built a 35-10 halftime lead in this first-round district matchup at Hart pitting WMC Rivers Division teams. Molli Schultz had 14 points and four assists to lead the Tigers (10-13), who advance to face Hart in Wednesday’s district semifinals.

Aubrey Klotz finished with 11 points and three assists for Shelby, while Biloxi Lee and Claire Gowell scored nine apiece for the Tigers. Lee had six rebounds and two assists. Kendall Zaverl added eight points, five rebounds and four assists for Shelby. Ciara Munoz had five points for the Tigers, while Bailey Dickman and Brylee Friedman each grabbed five rebounds.

No stats were submitted for Hesperia, which closes the season with a 1-22 record.

POSTPONEMENTS

Girls district basketball openers at Lakeview (Holton vs. Lakeview), Manistee (Manistee vs. Grand Traverse Academy) and Reed City (Reed City vs. Cadillac) were postponed Monday because of inclement weather. Those contests will be played tonight (Feb. 28).
