Wednesday and Thursday nights were a bit slow when it comes to West Michigan Conference girls basketball.
Only two games were reported from Jan. 24-25, 2024. Below is a roundup of those games:
THURSDAY, JAN. 25
WMC LAKES DIVISION
FREMONT 77, MANISTEE 47: Two nights after scoring 41 points in a key win at Ludington, Fremont hit the road again and unleashed an offense explosion in a victory over Manistee. The Packers are unbeaten in the WMC Lakes Division and remain alone atop the standings.
“This game made me nervous traveling up to second-place Manistee to play just two days after an emotional win at Ludington on Tuesday,” Fremont coach Peter Zerfas said. “Our girls were not nervous, though, and had their best first quarter of the year scoring 24 points to Manistee’s eight. Mia Clemence hit for four triples in the first quarter. The lead never got under 16 with all 11 players contributing.”
“We had a bad first quarter and that set the tone for the game,” Manistee coach Kenn Kott said. “Once we settled down in the second half, we did some nice things. Jayna (Edmondson) and Libby (McCarthy) carried the load again for us, but they’ll need some support down the road.”
Fremont leaders:
Mia Clemence 20 points, 5 steals
Riley Chase 18 points, 7 steals
Taylor DeKuiper 11 points, 7 steals
Khaila Noordyk 9 points
Eliana VandenBerg 7 points
Jessica Bennett 5 points, 7 rebounds, 7 blocks
Olivia Hansen 6 points, 5 rebounds
Katie Ackerman 7 assists, 5 rebounds
Manistee leaders:
Jayna Edmondson 23 points
Libby McCarthy 12 rebounds
Records:
Fremont 10-2 (6-0 WMC Lakes)
Manistee 5-6 (4-2 WMC Lakes)
Fremont junior Mia Clemence (Courtney Jimison | CatchMark)
*** WEDNESDAY, JAN. 24
WMC RIVERS DIVISION
MASON COUNTY CENTRAL 62, HESPERIA 13: Mason County Central earned road wins on back-to-back days with this victory over Hesperia, coming one night after a key victory over North Muskegon.
“Never easy to play games on back-to-back days, but our team had good energy to open the game on the road and got the job done in a conference game,” MCC coach Brian Beebe said. “Solid effort by all 14 Spartans that played today. Had 10 different players score and got a lot of kids some varsity experience to build off of. We now head into the second round of conference play at Holton on Friday. We have to prepare for a tough veteran team on the road.”
