Whitehall boys, Manistee girls capture 2023 WMC Lakes Division track and field titles

WHITEHALL — After an outstanding performance in last week’s Greater Muskegon Athletic Association meet at Mona Shores, Whitehall’s boys track and field team did more of the same Friday on its own turf.

Whitehall ran away from the competition in the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division meet, racking up 222 points to clear the competition by 135 points. Ludington was runner-up with 87 points, followed by Fremont (84), Montague (71), Manistee (30), Oakridge (20) and Orchard View (12).

On the girls side, Manistee totaled 136 points to edge Whitehall (129) and capture the WMC Lakes title. Ludington was third (101), followed by Montague (68), Oakridge (41), Fremont (38) and Orchard View (9).

The WMC Lakes meet was labeled the CatchMark SportsNet WMC “Game of the Week.” You can watch a replay of the livestream at the top of this story.

In the boys meet, Whitehall took first place in 13 of 17 events and had a top-two finisher in 16 events.

Vikings senior pole vaulter David Conrad broke his own school record with an effort of 15 feet, 9.5 inches. Other notable winners for Whitehall included junior Malcolm Earvin in the 100-meter dash (11.16) and 200 dash (22.68), junior Trannon Aylor in the 400 (personal-record 49.35), senior Carter McIlroy in the 3200 (9:49.68), senior Wesley Russell in shot put (53 feet, 1 inch), and sophomore Camden Thompson in high jump (6-3) and 110 hurdles (15.64).

Whitehall’s 4×100 relay team of Earvin, Corbin Vanderstelt, Lukas Palmer and Nate Bolley finished in a winning time of 43.92 seconds. The Vikings’ 4×200 relay quartet of Aylor, Bolley, Palmer and Earvin won in 1:29.82. Whitehall’s 4×400 relay foursome of Palmer, Bolley, Kal Koehler and Aylor took first in 3:29.89.

Other event winners in the boys meet included Fremont’s Sean Pettis in the 800 (2:02.98 PR) and 1600 (4:24.90); Fremont’s Daniel Romero in the 300 hurdles (41.91) and long jump (20-6); and Manistee’s Caius Johns in discus (129-0.5).

In the girls meet, Manistee sophomore Audrey Huizinga won the 400 (1:01.99) and she ran legs on first-place 4×200 relay (1:50.05) and 4×400 relay (4:20.24) teams. The Chippewas’ quartet of Ashtyn Janis, Alayna Edmondson, Libby McCarthy and Lacey Zimmerman took first place in the 4×100 relay (53.39). Janis, McCarthy and Zimmerman joined Huizinga in the 4×200 and 4×400.

Whitehall senior Maelie Hope turned in another outstanding performance, winning four events: Shot put (37-7), discus (139-6), 100 dash (12.64) and 200 dash (26.37). Ludington sophomore Catherine Karboske captured first place in three events — 100 hurdles (17.37 PR), 300 hurdles (51.69 PR) and pole vault (8-6).

Other event winners included Whitehall sophomore Cami Kraai in the 800 (2:27.39) and 1600 (5:22.00 PR); Whitehall senior Ariana Treat in the 3200 (11:41.16); Whitehall junior Arianna Black in high jump (4-10); Oakridge junior Chasity Nuell in long jump (13-9); and Ludington’s 4×800 relay team (10:28.75) of Olivia Anderson, Summer Brower, Nadia Grierson and Christina Theis.
