WMC girls basketball: Montague, Hart squeak out league victories; Third quarter powers North Muskegon

West Michigan Conference girls teams gear up for district playoffs

Girls basketball resumed in the West Michigan Conference on Thursday evening.

Three final matchups occurred before league teams enter their respective district tournaments next week. Montague hosted Shelby and Hart hosted Oakridge in league play. Black River traveled to North Muskegon for some nonleague action.

The roundup of these games is found below.

MONTAGUE 42, SHELBY 39: At Montague, the host Wildcats struggled to find their offensive in the first half. Shelby locked in a 24-17 lead at the break. Montague gained the advantage and caught a spark in the fourth quarter to walk away with the conference victory.

Emma Peterson 9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists

Claire Meacham 9 points, 5 rebounds

Shelby leaders:

Kendall Zoulek 16 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists

Ella Olmstead 8 points, 5 rebounds

Biloxi Lee 2 points, 4 rebounds

Montague 16-4 overall, 12-2 WMC

Shelby 11-9 overall, 7-7 WMC

HART 47, OAKRDIGE 35: At Hart, the host Pirates jumped out to a 20-5 lead in the first quarter, but encountered some roadblocks throughout the remainder the game which provided Oakridge an opportunity decrease the deficit. The Eagles battled to stay in the game, but were unable to overcome the Pirates. Hart coach Travis Rosema gave credit to the Eagle’s players and coaching staff, but plans to use this game as a learning experience for his girls heading into the district playoffs.

Morgan Marvin 9 points, 4 rebounds, 6 steals, 3 blocks

Addi Hovey 9 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals

Aspen Boutell 8 points, 4 assists, 3 steals

Oakridge leaders:

Destyni Lane 13 points, 2 rebounds, 7 steals

Anna Lundquist 7 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists

Andrea Romero-Serrano 5 points, 2 steals, 2 rebounds

Hart 15-3 overall, 14-0 WMC

Oakridge 7-12 overall, 6-7 WMC

NORTH MUSKEGON 37, BLACK RIVER 30: At North Muskegon, The Norse used a strong third quarter to gain an advantage over a visiting Black River squad. Made free throws and possession control were the difference maker for the Norse down the stretch.

North Muskegon leaders:
