KENT CITY — Andrew Quinn stood only 5-foot-8 as a freshman at Mason County Central.
He departs high school about 6-foot-4 and with his head in the clouds. That’s because Quinn’s a two-sport state champion in his senior year, after he captured the shot put title in the MHSAA Division 3 track and field finals at Kent City.
Quinn heaved the shot a personal-best 61 feet, 1.5 inches, to hold off West Michigan Conference rival Kellen Kimes of Hart, who also established a new PR of 58-8 en route to a runner-up finish. Kimes went on to win the state discus title.
Quinn, who upset the top seed en route to seizing the Division 4 285-pound state wrestling title in March at Ford Field, quite obviously hit a growth spurt after his freshman year. Now, he’s taking his large frame and considerable talents to Saginaw Valley State University for track and field.
Quinn wasn’t the only Mason County Central athlete who shined Saturday. In fact, all four of the Spartans boys at the meet placed in their respective events.
High jumpers Quentin Lange and Jermiah Patterson placed third (6-4) and sixth (6-3) in the event, respectively, despite not clearing higher than 6-foot previously this season. Patterson also placed fifth in long jump (21-3.5).
Meanwhile, senior Ethan Wood soared to a fourth-place finish in pole vault at 13-3.
