In a stunning reversal of fortunes, Fremont’s boys basketball team wiped out a 10-point deficit with a monster fourth quarter to post an unbelievable 49-42 victory over host Montague Friday night in West Michigan Conference Lakes Division play.
The Packers trailed the Wildcats entering the fourth quarter, 40-30, then outscored the hosts 19-2 in the pivotal final frame.
With the win, Fremont (8-12, 4-6 WMC Lakes) completed the season sweep of Montague (11-9, 4-7). On Jan. 5, the Packers defeated the visiting Wildcats in overtime at Fremont, 52-43.
“This was a gutsy effort from our boys tonight,” Fremont coach Adam Bowen said. “We struggled to find any rhythm offensively for the first three quarters. Montague is a very good defensive team, and (6-foot-8 Isaiah) Atchison makes it almost impossible to score near the basket with his length and athleticism.
“I thought our defense was very good also. We executed our game plan really well, and because of that we kept the game close. We trailed 40-30 heading into the fourth quarter, and our offense finally started to click. We outscored them 19-2 in the last quarter to secure a very good win.”
Kyler DeKuiper led Fremont with 11 points, four steals, and four rebounds. Will DeBlake had 10 points and three steals for the Packers.
Cole Herremans scored a game-high 15 points for Montague. Paul Olson had eight points and Jack Degen six for the Wildcats. The top two scorers for Montague, seniors Owen Raeth and Atchison, were limited to four points apiece.
