Montague Girls Golf Snag GMAA Title, 4th in Last 6 Years

Individual and team standings included!

I feel like every other week I’m writing about the good ol’ ’Gue. Some might even call me a homer (I promise I’m not). Truth is, the Wildcats just keep finding a way to win — especially the girls golf squad. Montague has cemented itself as a powerhouse in West Michigan and beyond, and Tuesday at Chase Hammond Golf Course the Wildcats once again proved why. The Cats rolled to the 2025 Greater Muskegon Athletic Association Championship, their first county title since 2022 and fourth overall since 2020.

Montague’s rise isn’t sudden — it’s a continuation of something that started a long time ago. Since at least 2019, the Wildcats have sent a golfer to the state finals every year. They rattled off three straight county titles from 2020 through 2022 before Reeths-Puffer briefly took over the throne the past two seasons.

That legacy was even captured in one of CatchMark’s OG pieces, when Scott DeCamp chronicled Montague’s run of city titles back in 2022. The Cats haven’t slowed down since (https://catchmarksports.com/mackenzie-goudreau-breaks-own-school-record-montague-wins-third-straight-city-golf-title/).

This year’s squad, guided by head coach Phil Kerr, has leaned on a deep, steady lineup. Leading the charge Tuesday was junior standout Molly Mulder, who carded an 82 (+10). Coach Phil Kerr praised both Mulder and senior Marguerite O’Connell for their clutch play throughout the season.

“Molly Mulder and Marguerite O’Connell have stepped up at key moments to keep our team score at the top of the leaderboard,” Kerr said.

Right behind Mulder was senior sensation Cadence Fox, the 2025 West Michigan Conference individual champion, who shot an 86 (+14). The rest of Montague’s scoring lineup was just as reliable: Brynlee Kessler (93, +21), O’Connell (94, +22), and Addi Smith (96, +24).

While Montague secured the team trophy, Reeths-Puffer star Sophia McCollum once again stole the individual spotlight. McCollum fired a sparkling 71 (-1), her second straight GMAA individual championship.

She was the only golfer in the field to finish under par, cruising to a 10-stroke victory. McCollum closed in style, nearly acing the par-3 17th before tapping in for birdie, then rolling in a long birdie putt on 18 to finish in red figures.

Expect another article soon on McCollum’s impressive back-to-back county titles — and the growing buzz around her breakout season.
