The 2025-26 wrestling season is underway, and area teams came out sharp Wednesday night as Montague opened with a sweep and Spring Lake powered to a decisive opening win.

Montague starts season 2-0 with tight win, lopsided rout

Montague couldn’t have asked for a better start, going 2-0 on the night with wins over Kenowa Hills and Newaygo.

The Wildcats opened with a down-to-the-wire battle, slipping past Kenowa Hills 39-38. Montague then turned things up a notch in the second match, rolling to a 69-12 victory over Newaygo to complete the sweep.

Montague had several wrestlers put together perfect nights. Going 2-0 were Chayse Maddox, Gavyn Maddox, Fletcher Thommen, Kaiden Jeffery, Kaiden French, Maverick Osborn, and Gibson Smith. Earning wins at 1-0 were Jon Mueller, Emma Trevino, Kenneth Heaton, and Jackson Peterson.

Montague will be back in action Saturday at Big Rapids in the Cardinal Invitational.

Spring Lake pins pile up in win over Mona Shores

In Norton Shores, Spring Lake opened the season with a convincing 54-26 win over Mona Shores, using a wave of pins to create separation throughout the match.

The Lakers got falls from Tristan Wilson, Trevor Christner, Reid Wesley, Noah Sanders, Emmitt Wenta, Jason Liu, Gus Hill, Mason Troyer, and Tytan Flemming, turning the opener into a strong team statement.

Spring Lake returns to the mat next with a road trip to Hudsonville on Friday, Dec. 12.
