Hart Stuns Shelby in District Final; Muskegon Claims Defensive Battle, Spring Lake Dominates

District championship night delivered everything fans could ask for Friday across West Michigan — a stunning upset, a defensive slugfest between ranked teams, and a dominant performance that left no doubt.

But the headline of the night came in White Cloud, where Hart shocked league champion Shelby 48-46, ending the Tigers’ impressive season and capturing the Division 3 district title.

Hart 48, Shelby 46

Shelby entered the district final as the clear favorite. The Tigers had beaten Hart twice during the regular season, 49-38 in December and 53-44 last month, and had controlled much of the year with consistent scoring and rebounding.

Friday night was a different story.

Shelby jumped out to a strong start, taking a 17-12 lead after the first quarter and holding a slim 24-23 advantage at halftime. The Tigers still led 35-33 after three quarters, but Hart found another gear in the final period. The Pirates outscored Shelby 15-11 in the fourth quarter, making key plays down the stretch to pull off the upset and secure the district championship.

Rilynn Porter led Hart with 18 points, while Natalie Rosema added 13 and Reese Smith scored nine.

Shelby was led by Jayna Burmeister with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Michelle Peterson added 13 points and Annabelle Stark finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Now Hart moves on to face Parchment at 7 p.m. Monday at Calvin Christian in Grandville. Kent City is on the other side of the bracket against Saugatuck, creating the possibility of a Hart-Kent City regional final on March 11.

If both teams advance, Hart could get another shot at Kent City after an earlier-season loss — and after flipping two losses to Shelby into a district title win, the Pirates have already shown how different March can be.

Muskegon 35, Rockford 27

In a matchup of two top-five teams in Division 1, Muskegon relied on its defense to capture a district championship. The Big Reds defeated Rockford 35-27 in a physical, defensive battle Friday night at Mona Shores. Mariah Sain led Muskegon with a game-high 19 points, scoring more than half of her team’s total while helping control the tempo throughout the game. Muskegon’s defense was the difference, holding Rockford to its lowest point total of the season.

Next up, Muskegon will face Saginaw Heritage at 7 p.m. Monday at Ithaca High School in the regional semifinals. Heritage advanced with a 72-34 win over Saginaw United, while the Big Reds carry a 21-2 record into the next round.

Spring Lake 54, Whitehall 11

Spring Lake left little doubt in its district final, dominating Whitehall from start to finish in a 54-11 victory. The Lakers led 8-4 after the first quarter before breaking the game open in the second period. Spring Lake built a 26-8 halftime lead and continued to pull away in the second half. By the end of the third quarter, the Lakers had stretched the lead to 39-11, cruising to the decisive win.

Next up, Spring Lake will face Grand Rapids West Catholic at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Allendale High School in the regional semifinals. The matchup brings an added storyline, with the Lakers looking to avenge an earlier-season 47-38 loss to West Catholic.

Big Rapids 52, Fremont 41

The Fremont Packers saw their strong season come to an end in Cadillac with a 52-41 loss to Big Rapids in the Division 2 district championship game. The contest was tight throughout the first three quarters. The game was tied 9-9 after the first quarter, and Fremont trailed by just one point 24-23 at halftime.

Fremont responded in the third quarter, outscoring Big Rapids 11-9 to take a narrow lead entering the final quarter. But momentum shifted early in the fourth. Fremont had possession to start the quarter, but three straight turnovers led to easy baskets for Big Rapids, allowing the Cardinals to regain the lead. The Packers stayed within three to five points for most of the fourth quarter, but were unable to complete the comeback.

Taylor DeKuiper led Fremont with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Railee Durham scored 11 points. Ella Shriver added eight and Brynna Barnhart finished with seven.

Fremont closes the season with an impressive 20-4 record.

Kent City 46, Ravenna 39

Kent City also secured a district championship Friday night with a 46-39 win over Ravenna. The Eagles built momentum early, leading 8-6 after the first quarter and 21-14 at halftime. Ravenna battled back and cut the deficit to 29-25 entering the fourth quarter, but Kent City held off the rally down the stretch to claim the title and advance to the regional tournament.
