March basketball always carries a different weight. Every possession matters, every run swings momentum, and seasons can end in a matter of seconds. On Wednesday night, that tension played out across two regional championship games where everything was on the line. For Hart, the pressure came in the form of a back-and-forth battle that wasn’t decided until the final seconds. For Muskegon, the moment demanded control and dominance against a strong Midland team.
The result: two programs moving forward, two seasons still alive, and two teams proving they belong among the best left in Michigan.
Hart Pirates Battle Through Chaos to Claim Regional Title
If a team wants to survive the postseason, it has to be able to handle momentum swings, pressure possessions, and the reality that one play can decide everything. Hart did exactly that.
The Pirates jumped out quickly, racing to a 10-0 lead and finishing the first quarter ahead 12-4. Early on, Hart’s defense dictated the pace, forcing Kent City to chase the game. But championship games rarely stay predictable. Kent City stormed back in the second quarter with an 8-0 run fueled by Kenzie Freeland, tying the game at 12-12. By halftime, the Eagles had completely flipped the momentum and held a 26-20 lead.
Suddenly the pressure shifted. Hart found itself chasing the game throughout the third quarter. Kent City stretched the lead behind Ellie Hansen’s scoring burst, holding a 36-31 advantage entering the fourth. That’s when Reese Smith carried the weight of the moment. The senior erupted for 14 fourth-quarter points, hitting two three-pointers early to spark the comeback. After Kent City pushed the lead to 46-40, Hart answered again. Natalie Rosema drilled a three-pointer and Smith followed with four points to tighten the game to 46-44.
From there, the Pirates leaned on composure. Smith knocked down four free throws and added a short jumper to give Hart a 50-48 lead with one minute left. After Kent City split free throws to pull within one, Smith added one more free throw to make it 51-49. Hart then executed perfectly in the closing seconds, using fouls strategically to prevent Kent City from getting a clean shot before time expired.
The Pirates celebrated a regional championship earned the hard way. Smith led Hart with 21 points, including the decisive fourth-quarter performance. Aurora Virtanen added 10 points, Natalie Rosema finished with eight, and Rilynn Porter scored six. Freeland led Kent City with 17 points. But the story of the night was Hart’s ability to respond when momentum shifted.
This win says something about the Pirates: they are comfortable in chaos. And that matters because the stakes only grow from here.
Hart now advances to the Division 3 quarterfinals where the Pirates will face powerhouse Niles Brandywine. The pressure increases, the stage gets bigger, and the margin for error shrinks. But Wednesday proved one thing — Hart knows how to survive when the moment gets heavy.

Muskegon Lady Reds Send a Message in Regional Championship Win
While Hart’s victory came through late-game drama, Muskegon took a different path. The Lady Reds made it clear from the opening minutes that they weren’t interested in a close game. Behind a dominant start from Miss Basketball finalist Mariah Sain, Muskegon jumped out to a 10-0 lead and immediately put Midland on its heels.
Sain scored 12 points in the first quarter and continued her offensive surge throughout the first half, finishing with 21 points before halftime on the strength of four three-pointers. That early explosion changed everything about the game. Midland briefly cut the deficit to 25-20, but Muskegon answered quickly. Sain knocked down another three-pointer to push the lead back out and restore the Lady Reds’ momentum before halftime.
From there, Muskegon’s identity took over. Defense. The Lady Reds’ length, speed, and pressure limited Midland’s ability to find rhythm offensively. Every possession became difficult, and Muskegon steadily stretched the lead throughout the second half.
Sain finished with 25 points and six rebounds to lead the way. Dy’Nasti Bell delivered a strong all-around performance as well, posting an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double on her birthday while anchoring the interior defense. Cece Bonner and Antanique Sargent each added five points, while Muskegon’s depth stepped up in the backcourt when Bonner briefly exited after tweaking an ankle.
The Lady Reds didn’t panic. They didn’t lose momentum. They simply kept doing what they’ve done all season. This win matters beyond just the regional trophy. Muskegon hasn’t won a regional title since the 2018-19 season, and the program is now positioned to make another deep postseason run.
Next comes a highly anticipated quarterfinal matchup against Grand Haven — a team that narrowly beat Muskegon 47-46 earlier this season.
That rematch carries serious stakes. For Muskegon, it’s not just about advancing. It’s about rewriting the program’s history and pushing past the barrier that has stopped previous teams.

Hart’s quarterfinal shapes up as a test of composure against a Brandywine team that brings scoring balance, postseason experience, and the momentum of a third straight regional title. For the Pirates, the path to an upset likely depends on controlling tempo, defending without letting Brandywine’s offense get comfortable, and finding another clutch scoring answer late. Muskegon’s matchup with Grand Haven looks different. The Lady Reds will likely need to deal with size, rim protection, and another grind-it-out defensive battle against a team that already beat them once by a single point. If Muskegon can create offense early and avoid getting trapped in Grand Haven’s half-court defensive style, the Lady Reds have a strong chance to flip the result this time.
