Last week’s softball action was packed with big moments, from Natalie Rosel’s no-hitter for Ravenna and Jayna Burmeister’s grand slam for Shelby to Lainey McDaniel’s dominant work in the circle and at the plate for Reeths-Puffer, while Ludington opened its season with a pair of wins behind strong pitching and a huge night from Madelyn Kenyon.
Ravenna Rolls Past Fremont
Ravenna also opened its season with a sweep, defeating Fremont 8-4 and 13-6. Natalie Rosel dominated in game one, throwing a no-hitter while striking out 12 and allowing just one run. Reese Herremans and Rosel each collected two hits, while Emily Postema added a double. In game two, the Bulldogs’ offense came alive. Herremans led the way with three doubles, while Postema recorded two hits, including a triple. Rosel earned the win in the circle, striking out six. Ravenna (2-0) will host Jenison next, while Fremont (0-2) looks to rebound Friday.
Ludington Sweeps Mason County Central
Ludington opened its season in impressive fashion, sweeping Mason County Central 12-2 and 7-6 at Oriole Field to start the year 2-0.
In the opener, Annika Heemstra set the tone in the circle, tossing a five-inning one-hitter while striking out five. Offensively, Madelyn Kenyon led the charge with a perfect 3-for-3 performance that included a triple, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Kaelyn Cole added two hits, while Jacee Cole, Braylynn Lange, and Taylor King each contributed.
Game two proved to be much tighter, but the Orioles held off a late push to secure the sweep. Madison VanSickle went the distance in the circle, allowing four hits while striking out nine. Kenyon stayed hot at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Eva Flores added two RBIs and Heemstra scored twice.
Reeths-Puffer Powered by McDaniel
Lainey McDaniel delivered a standout all-around performance to lead Reeths-Puffer to a sweep over Cedar Springs, 5-3 and 14-3. In game one, McDaniel struck out 13 while allowing just two earned runs. She also starred offensively with three doubles. Lorelei Herrygers added three hits. The Rockets broke things open in game two, scoring 11 runs over the final two innings. McDaniel continued her big day with multiple hits and five RBIs, while Madi Reichert added four RBIs. Makayla Jewett earned the win in the circle.
Shelby Dominates Benzie Central
Shelby made a statement in its season opener, outscoring Benzie Central 33-6 in a sweep, winning 15-3 and 18-3. Jayna Burmeister had a monster performance in game one, blasting a grand slam and a three-run triple while also striking out 10 in the circle. In game two, Shelby exploded for 14 runs in a single inning to seal the mercy-rule victory. Emma Stovall led the team with three RBIs, while Burmeister, Stovall, and Hali Hayes each recorded multiple hits.
