West Michigan Conference Girls Soccer Race Tightens as Season Nears Finish

The race for the West Michigan Conference girls soccer title is heating up heading into the final stretch of the regular season, and Monday’s results may have set up an even bigger showdown in the days ahead.

Ludington continued its dominant conference run with a convincing 3-0 victory over Hart, while North Muskegon stayed within striking distance by shutting out Fremont 4-0 in a battle between the league’s top contenders.

Elsewhere around the conference, Montague defeated Manistee 3-0, Ravenna rolled past Whitehall 6-1, and Oakridge earned its first conference win with a 3-1 victory over Orchard View in the “Battle of the Birds.”

Ludington Clinches Share of Conference Title

Ludington took another major step toward a conference championship with its 3-0 win over Hart.

The Orioles improved to 11-5-1 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 9-0, clinching at least a share of the West Michigan Conference title.

Hestyn Stowe led the offensive attack with two goals, while Grace Forfinski also scored for Ludington. Assists came from Eloise Kwietniewski, Leeahna Veeneman, and Stowe.

Cambria Britton earned the shutout in goal, making three saves on three shots on target.

Ludington now turns its attention to a tough non-conference matchup Thursday against Division 3 state-ranked No. 8 Traverse City St. Francis before closing the regular season Monday in a massive conference showdown against second-place North Muskegon.

With Ludington still unbeaten in league play, that matchup suddenly carries enormous conference title implications.

North Muskegon Sends Statement Against Fremont

North Muskegon delivered one of its most impressive performances of the season Monday night, overpowering Fremont 4-0 in a showdown between conference contenders.

The Norse controlled possession and tempo throughout the match, outshooting the Packers 15-1 while showcasing dominant defending and strong goaltending from Izzy McFarren, who recorded the shutout.

Delaney Young and Alex Johnson scored first-half goals to give North Muskegon a 2-0 halftime lead before Emmy Creed added two second-half goals to put the game away. Additional assists came from Dylan Leonard and Johnson.

The victory pushed the Norse to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play. However, North Muskegon’s lone conference loss came via a self-reported rules violation involving the use of a junior varsity goalkeeper in too many halves, not an on-field defeat.

That technical loss makes Monday’s upcoming matchup with Ludington even more meaningful. Ludington remains undefeated in conference competition, while North Muskegon has arguably not been beaten on the field by a league opponent this season.

If the Norse can defeat Ludington in the regular-season finale, it could create even more debate about who truly sits atop the conference hierarchy.
