Stadium Tours: Fred Jacks Memorial Field — Honoring the Past, Building the Future

Some stadiums host games.

Others become part of a community’s identity.

For generations of North Muskegon residents, Fred Jacks Memorial Field has been much more than a place to watch football or soccer. It has served as a gathering place where athletes compete, families connect, traditions are celebrated, and memories are created.

Whether it’s a Friday night football game under the lights, a spring soccer match, a track meet, or graduation day, the field has long been at the center of community life in North Muskegon.

The Man Behind the Name

Many visitors know the stadium’s name, but fewer know the story behind it.

Fred Jacks was one of the Muskegon area’s most accomplished athletes and coaches. An All-State football player, Jacks continued his athletic career at Michigan State, Western Michigan, and the University of Illinois before playing professional football with the Chicago Bears. He later coached football at both Hamtramck and North Muskegon schools while building a respected chiropractic practice in North Muskegon.

More importantly, he became known for his dedication to young athletes and the local community.

After Jacks passed away in 1962, North Muskegon moved to honor his legacy. In 1963, city officials approved a memorial marker and designated the city-owned football stadium as Fred Jacks Memorial Field. The naming recognized a man whose impact extended far beyond the playing field through his dedication to athletics, coaching, and the North Muskegon community.

More than sixty years later, his name remains one of the most recognizable in North Muskegon sports history.

A Hub for Local Sports

Located on the campus of North Muskegon Public Schools, Fred Jacks Memorial Field has become one of the most recognizable athletic venues in the area.

What makes the stadium unique isn’t just what happens on the field, it’s where it sits.

Nestled within North Muskegon’s residential streets and surrounded by homes, Fred Jacks Memorial Field feels less like a sports complex and more like the community’s backyard. On game nights, the sounds of cheering fans and marching bands echo through the neighborhood, creating an atmosphere that is distinctly North Muskegon.

That close connection to the community creates a sense of ownership and pride. Residents don’t simply attend games here—they feel connected to the field itself. Generations of families have walked to games, watched from nearby streets, and gathered under the lights to support Norsemen athletics.

Over the years, thousands of athletes have competed here while generations of fans have filled the stands. The field serves as the home for North Muskegon football, soccer, track and field events, youth sports, and numerous community gatherings throughout the year.

Parents cheer from the same stands where they once sat as students. Alumni return to reconnect with old friends and relive memories. Young athletes dream of one day taking the field themselves.

In a small community like North Muskegon, places like Fred Jacks Memorial Field become woven into the fabric of everyday life. The stadium isn’t just where the community gathers, it’s part of the neighborhood itself.

Investing in the Future While Honoring Tradition

While Fred Jacks Memorial Field remains the home of North Muskegon football, complete with its traditional natural grass playing surface, the athletic complex around it has entered a new era.

Behind the stadium sits a new synthetic turf soccer and multi-use complex, one of the most visible results of North Muskegon’s investment in athletics. Completed in 2024, the facility provides a durable, year-round playing surface and expanded opportunities for student-athletes and community recreation.

The project was not without debate. For generations, the area was home to the historic James B. Johnson baseball field, affectionately known as “The Shipyard.” Built in 1920 and home to North Muskegon baseball since 1935, the field held more than a century of memories for players, coaches, and fans. Ultimately, the field was removed to make way for the new soccer complex while plans moved forward for a new baseball facility elsewhere.

Today, visitors can see North Muskegon’s commitment to both its past and future. Fred Jacks Memorial Field continues its tradition as a natural grass football venue, while the new turf complex behind it reflects the community’s ongoing investment in the next generation of athletes.

More Than a Stadium

As North Muskegon continues to grow and invest in athletics, Fred Jacks Memorial Field remains a symbol of what makes the community special.

It represents tradition and progress, history and opportunity, competition and community.

Long after the final whistle blows, the field continues to bring people together. It serves as a reminder that athletic facilities are more than grass, turf, bleachers, and scoreboards.

They are places where communities gather, memories are made, and traditions are passed from one generation to the next.

That is what makes Fred Jacks Memorial Field one of North Muskegon’s true landmarks.
