Boys district soccer: Shelby, Hart, Orchard View advance with first-round wins

Several West Michigan Conference teams moving on to district semifinal matches.

First round of boys district soccer action resumed Thursday and a trio of West Michigan Conference teams advanced in Division 3 action.

Shelby edged host Fremont, 3-2; Hart mercied visiting Newaygo, 8-0; and Orchard View rolled past Belding, 5-1.

Here are details from those matches reported to CatchMark:

DIVISION 3

SHELBY 3, FREMONT 2: Visiting Shelby earned a hard-fought victory over West Michigan Conference foe Fremont. The host Packers got on the board first on a goal by Killian Prewitt 20 seconds into the contest. Gonzalo Garcia notched the assist.

Shelby answered with the next three goals, two of them by Mason Garcia with the winner being with 15 minutes left in the game. The teams were tied at 1 at halftime. Carson Claeys scored the other Shelby goal, while Prewitt had two goals for Fremont. Nacho Ortiz had a pair of assists for the Tigers, while Mauricio Castillo had the other.

Smiley Valdez made four saves for Shelby, while Ben Mellema had eight for Fremont.

Shelby (12-9) advances to Monday’s 4:30 p.m. district semifinal against host Manistee (14-3), which is the No. 1 seed in the district. Fremont finishes with a 4-15-1 record.

HART 8, NEWAYGO 0: Guillermo Ortega netted his second-straight four-goal game and he added a pair of assists in leading host Hart to a rout of Newaygo. The Pirates (12-6-2) tie for the most victories in a season since 2012.

Adrian Belmares, Bryce Jorissen, Adan Cruz and Tyler Larios-Mendez also scored goals for Hart. Tony Rayo finished with two assists to become the single-season assist record-holder for the Pirates, who did not allow a single shot on goal.

Hart advances to Monday’s 4 p.m. district semifinal, hosting WMC foe Montague. Newaygo finishes 5-9.

ORCHARD VIEW 5, BELDING 1: It’s been a tough season for Orchard View’s soccer team, but the Cardinals had a great day Thursday. They defeated visiting Belding, 5-1, in a first-round district match.

No details were submitted by Orchard View (2-15-1), which hosts neighboring rival Oakridge in a district semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
