Boys golf regionals: Evan McDermott leads Spring Lake to Division 2 title in Ludington

Senior Evan McDermott shot a 3-under 69 to earn medalist honors and lead Spring Lake’s boys golf team to a Division 2 regional title Tuesday at Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Ludington.

The University of Nebraska signee beat the rest of the field by five shots.

Spring Lake finished with a team score of 310, four strokes better than runner-up Grand Rapids Northview. Cadillac was third at 328.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on qualifying squads advance to the state finals. The Division 2 state finals will be held June 10-11 at The Meadows on the campus of Grand Valley State University.

Gaylord’s Kole Putnam (74), Greenville’s Sutton Schroeder (78) and Reeths-Puffer’s Tyler Tallefson (79) captured the three individual qualifier spots.

Reeths-Puffer was seventh as a team at 354, while Whitehall finished 10th at 361. Ludington was 12th (364), Fruitport 13th (366) and Fremont 17th (429).

Kyren Bluhm paced Whitehall with an 86, while Nick Fuller shot 87.

In regional golf today (Wednesday, June 1), Montague hosts Hart, North Muskegon, Oakridge, Ravenna, Shelby and several other teams in Division 3 action at Old Channel Trail.
