FREMONT — Temperatures in the mid- to high-30s, steady, light rain and wind created for some mighty challenging conditions for dozens of runners in a West Michigan Conference Mega Jamboree Tuesday afternoon at Fremont Middle School.
They fought through it, however, including at least a few runners who lost a shoe during the course of the race. Ludington sophomore Summer Brower lost one of her shoes in the muck about 100 yards into the girls race. She never looked back and finished the race with just one shoe. She finished third in her division to boot!
The final conference meet of the season was moved to Fremont’s Hill and Bale course because of flooding at Mason County Fairgrounds.
The meet was scored separately by division. Hart’s boys and girls teams both ran away with first-place finishes in the Rivers Division. In the Lakes Division, Ludington’s girls team finished first while Fremont was at the top of the heap for the boys.
In the overall race, Hart senior Clayton Ackley edged Whitehall senior Andre Richmond at the finish in one heck of a battle, while Hart sophomore Jessica Jazwinski ran away with a first-place finish on the girls side.
Here are the top five individual finishers in each category:
