Five Muskegon-area teams win volleyball district titles, advance to regional play

DIVISION 1

Grand Haven defeated Mona Shores 3-1 to win its 15th consecutive district championship. After dropping the first game 34-32, the Buccaneers cleaned up their play to win out 25-18, 25-20 and 25-21. Grand Haven will host the regional next week and will open against OK Red Conference foe Rockford at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

DIVISION 2

Whitehall secured a second-straight district title Thursday night by beating Fruitport 3-0. The Vikings advance to regional play at Orchard View High School and take on three-time defending state champion Grand Rapids Christian at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Elsewhere, Cadillac dominated Kingsley 3-0 to walk away with a district trophy at Manistee High School. The Vikings advance to regional play at Alma High School on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the District 33 winner, which will be decided Friday night.

Newaygo breezed through Grant 3-0 to win a district championship at Sparta. Newaygo will take on Hudsonville Unity Christian in their regional semifinal matchup at Orchard View High School on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

DIVISION 3

North Muskegon gave Division 3 No. 1-ranked Western Michigan Christian all it could handle in a five-game thriller at North Muskegon High School Thursday night. After dropping game one, 25-23, WMC was forced to battle back to stay in contention for the trophy. In game five, WMC took care of business 15-5 to walk away with the title. WMC will host Morley Stanwood in the regional opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Elsewhere, Shelby topped Hesperia 3-1 to win the District 73 title game. The Tigers will play in the regional semifinals on Tuesday at Western Michigan High School against the winner of District 76, which will be decided Friday night.

Morley Stanwood edged Kent City 3-2 to win the District 74 championship. Morley Stanwood will take on Western Michigan Christian in their regional matchup on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

DIVISION 4

Muskegon Catholic Central swept Pentwater, 3-0, in the District 110 title game. MCC with play in Brethren on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart.
