The Fremont High School boys cross country team has etched its name into the annals of Michigan high school athletics. In 2020, the Packers celebrated a milestone that many programs can only dream of—securing their tenth state championship. This remarkable achievement not only underscores the program’s sustained excellence but also cements its legacy as one of the most successful in the state.

Under the steady leadership of Coach Cliff Somers, Fremont has become synonymous with cross country success. Somers, who has been at the helm for many years, has cultivated a culture of discipline, hard work, and teamwork that has propelled the Packers to the pinnacle of the sport time and again. His ability to consistently bring out the best in his athletes has been a cornerstone of Fremont’s dominance.

Fremont’s journey to greatness began in 1976 when they captured their first state title. This victory set the stage for what would become a storied tradition of excellence. The Packers continued to build on this foundation, securing additional state titles in 1983, 1985, 1989, 1991, and 1993. These early victories established Fremont as a perennial powerhouse in Michigan cross country.

After a brief hiatus from the top spot, the Packers returned to championship form in 2007. This victory marked the beginning of a new era of success for Fremont, with the team adding state titles in 2015, 2019, and their historic tenth title in 2020. Over the course of these four decades, Fremont also demonstrated their remarkable consistency by finishing as state runners-up six times—in 1994, 2001, 2004, 2014, 2016, and 2018.

The 2020 championship was a particularly significant moment for the program, not just because it was their tenth title, but because it was a testament to the resilience and determination of the team. In a year marked by unprecedented challenges, the Packers rose to the occasion, embodying the spirit and grit that have defined Fremont cross country for decades.
