The Packers didn’t forget. Last fall, they walked off their own field stunned after Montague knocked them out of the district tournament (you can read all about that win here). I honestly, might even say there was a bit of a rivalry stewing at the time. Then, during the girls season, after the Cats’ again knocked the Packers out in the district final, I referenced that same beef.
“Earlier this week, in a Coverage Area District Final Round-Up, I casually tossed out the idea that Montague and Fremont sports might be deserving of a Secret Nation: Beef History episode. At the time, it was meant as a joke—something light to spice up the narrative. But the more you look at it, the more you realize… it might actually be a legitimate narrative.”
Well, fast-forward to Wednesday night, and the Packers made sure history wouldn’t repeat itself and got some revenge for those two late-season losses.
Fueled by sharp ball movement and some relentless pressure, Fremont stormed past Montague 8-0 in a match that felt a little more personal than normal. The breakthrough goal came less than 10 minutes in when a corner kick pinballed around before Cam Witteveen tapped it home. Once that first one fell, the dam burst. Fremont piled on five more before halftime, leaving little doubt about the outcome.
Montague showed some pride in the second half, tightening up defensively and even creating a couple of chances. But by then, it was too late — the Packers already had full command.
The night also brought a historic moment: Deagan Klimek netted his 100th career goal. Article coming soon on that young man. Klimek wasn’t done there, either — he finished with three goals and two assists in a performance that felt like a somewhat of a personal stamp on the rivalry thus far. Javon Basso chipped in two scores and a helper, Adam Kalika added a pair of strikes, and Hudson Wiersema put one in himself. Corbin Martin served as the table-setter with two assists.
The win pushed Fremont into a tie with North Muskegon atop the WMC standings at 7-0-1, a fitting spot for a group that looks every bit like a contender. Montague, meanwhile, continues to search for its rhythm, sitting at 2-12-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the league.
