Coverage Area District Final Round-Up

There may be some beef within this article…

Byron Center vs. Grand Haven

5 p.m. @ Grandville High School (Division 1)

Grand Haven has been the real deal all season long. The Bucs roll in with a 12-2-3 record, and outside of a couple of bumps — both at the hands of Rockford and one against Mona Shores — they’ve left very little doubt that they’re among the best in D1. They’ve gone toe-to-toe with some of the top-tier teams in the state, including ties against East Kentwood, East Grand Rapids, and Rockford.

But here comes Byron Center, and the Bulldogs might be playing with even more momentum. They’re 16-1-3, and perhaps more impressively, they own two wins over Mona Shores — one of which was a 6-1 statement back in April. This one could go either way. If you’re into watching two giants collide, this is your game.

Spring Lake vs. Allendale

5 p.m. @ Coopersville High School (Division 2)

Spring Lake enters the final at 10-6-2, and if there’s one word to describe their season, it’s streaky. They’ve rattled off a few three-game win stretches, but also hit some cold patches. Most recently, they handled business in a 4-1 win over Reeths-Puffer to punch their ticket here. Wins over teams like Fruitport (2-0) and a close 2-1 loss to Grand Haven give them some solid résumé pieces.

Allendale started the season with a pair of losses to Grandville and Holland but settled in nicely after that. The Falcons put together a midseason four-game win streak before running into an East Grand Rapids buzzsaw.

Fremont vs. Montague

Some might consider this the “Game of the Week” (a little throwback to a piece of content that us here at CatchMark SportsNet used to produce). Neither team won the WMC Lakes conference this year but both gave it a scare.

Montague has had an odd season this year. They finished at 13-8, but it was very much a all-or-nothing type of season. Their closest margin, in either their loss or win category was 1, which only happened in two games, Marshall (part of the Ludington Tourney) and Manistee.

Fremont took the first meeting this season, 3-1. They also ripped Montague’s heart out in last year’s district final — in overtime, no less. So yeah… there’s some beef here.

If we’re being honest, this might be shaping up to be one of the best back-and-forth matchups in the area. Someone call Secret Base — because this one might need its own Beef History episode.

Montague fired back earlier this school year in boys soccer (you can read about that here), stunning Fremont and snatching their first-ever district title. Now we’re running it back on the girls side, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

This one’s got drama…some history…and just enough spice for a perfect district finale.

Western Michigan Christian vs. North Muskegon

6 p.m. @ North Muskegon High School (Division 4)

This is another one of those Game of the Week games. North Muskegon and WMC seem to continually find themselves, in multiple sports, in this same position. Actually, earlier this year, they matched up in boys soccer, which WMC ended up winning and went on to win a state final as well.

The Norse come in at 14-5, just shy of a WMC title after falling to Ludington in the final game of the regular season. That one stung — a 5-0 loss — but outside of that, NM has looked solid. Their most recent win, a 9-1 blowout of Potter’s House, showed they’ve still got plenty of firepower.

As for WMC, this isn’t quite the same team that made deep tournament runs in years past, but they’ve battled. Losses have mostly come to higher-division teams, and they’ve picked up wins over Fruitport, Ludington, Covenant Christian, and more.

Earlier this season, when these teams matched up, WMC took the win, 2-0. North Muskegon is on a roll, winning their last game 9-1 over Potter’s House but this one will be the matchup to see!
