Beckstrom Shines as Mona Shores Qualifies for State Tournament

Mona Shores held a balanced attack up and down the lineup to complete its regional weekend.

STONEGATE GOLF CLUB – Over the years, the Sailors have built a foundation of great golf teams, and the 2025 boys’ team is no different. On Thursday, Mona Shores hit the Stonegate greens with one goal: qualify for the state tournament.

The top three teams at an MHSAA golf regional qualify for the state finals. The top three individuals, who are not part of qualifying teams, also advance to the state finals.

Behind true freshman Cruz Beckstrom, the Sailors trounced their way to a third-place finish with a team score of 305 (+17).

Beckstrom, though just a freshman, has been one of, if not the best, golfers in the area this season. At the GMAA tournament, Beckstrom stroked a 75 and took first-place honors by four total swings.

Beckstrom striped a 70 (-2) through the front and back nine, which placed him first overall in a field of 101 golfers. Eddie Kuznar put together a solid day himself, shooting a 75 (+3), placing him 8th overall.

Lincoln Harwood (78, +6), Gavin Olson (82, +10), and Braddy Volkmann (86, +14) each provided a solid 18 holes of golf to clinch the state tournament.

Mona Shores has placed first in many meets this season, some of which include the OK Green Postseason Tournament, Tom Wilson Invitational, Katke Classic, and the GMAA City Tournament.

Forest Hills Northern (300) and Rockford (305) finished first and second, respectively, above Mona Shores. Portage Central (313) and Byron Center (316) fell short of qualifying with fourth and fifth-place finishes.

Reeths-Puffer’s Kristian Brown shot an 81 (+9) and finished in 31st place, respectively.

The Sailors will now head to Forest Akers West in East Lansing for the state finals June 7–8, where they’ll face off with powerhouses like Detroit Catholic Central and Grosse Pointe South.
