First off, I want to say thank you—thank you to all the SportsNuts for the help they provide to CatchMark SportsNet. Without them, we physically couldn’t do what we do, cover what we cover—however you want to put it. A special shoutout goes to Andy and Dee Carter, who helped cover Tuesday’s meet and provided photos from the course. We appreciate you more than you know! Now, lets get into it…
KATKE GOLF CLUB – Tuesday, May 28th, delivered picture-perfect weather for golf, and two local standouts made the most of it. While many of us could only dream of competing at that level, Manistee’s Max Scharp and Shelby’s Titan Carter turned that dream into a reality, qualifying for the MHSAA State Finals.
Carter and Scharp have been forces all season, consistently placing among the best in the West Michigan Conference Rivers and Lakes. On Tuesday, they stepped up once again on the big stage.
Scharp, who finished third overall in the WMC this season, played a composed round at Katke. He shot a 37 on the front nine (+1) and followed it up with a 42 on the back (+6) to post a solid 79 overall. Including birdies on holes 3 and 17.
Carter wasn’t far behind in the fireworks department. He carded a 40 on the front and closed strong with a 38 on the back, thanks in part to back-to-back birdies on holes 10 and 11. His total of 78 was good enough for fourth place individually, while Scharp followed closely behind in fifth.
Special thanks to Andy and Dee Carter for providing the great images above! Including our featured image! Without their help, and SportsNuts alike, we would never be able to cover all that we do!
In team standings, Northpointe Christian took home the regional title with a team score of 317. Grand Rapids Covenant Christian finished runner-up at 325, and West Catholic rounded out the top three at 340.
With their top-five finishes, Scharp and Carter have advanced to the MHSAA Division 3 State Finals, scheduled for June 6–7 at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale. They’ll join qualifiers from around the state in pursuit of high school golf’s ultimate prize, an MHSAA Individual State Title.
Additional regional action, including teams like Whitehall and Mona Shores, will be taking place throughout the week. Stay tuned to CatchMark SportsNet for continued coverage as the road to the state finals continues.
