The final scores have been recorded and championship trophies have been handed out, but for a select group of local athletes, the recognition is still coming.
All-state honors represent one of the highest achievements in Michigan high school athletics. Unlike conference or district awards, these selections require coaches from across the state to evaluate and compare the best players at every position. In sports such as baseball, softball and soccer, athletes advance through nomination and voting processes that narrow hundreds of deserving candidates down to a select few.
This spring, athletes from the West Michigan Conference and neighboring programs including Spring Lake, Mona Shores and Muskegon Western Michigan Christian earned their place among Michigan’s best.
Baseball
Baseball’s all-state selection process is among the most structured in Michigan high school sports. Players must first be nominated by their coach and earn All-District honors before advancing to All-Region consideration. Regional representatives then nominate players for statewide voting, where coaches evaluate statistics, strength of schedule, postseason success and overall impact.
This year’s local selections were led by Spring Lake, which placed three players on the Division 2 All-State team.
Michigan State-bound pitcher Maddux Kipling earned recognition after another dominant season on the mound, while catcher Owen Smies and outfielder Oliver Smies helped lead the Lakers through another successful campaign.
Grant junior Austin Gragg joined the Division 2 squad after emerging as one of the area’s top infielders.
In Division 3, Montague’s Eli Peterson and Cole Moss both earned all-state honors after helping pace the Wildcats throughout the season. Ravenna pitcher Dylan May rounded out the local selections, capping an outstanding senior year before continuing his baseball career at Grace College.

Softball
Softball’s all-state process begins with detailed nominations submitted by coaches to the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association. Coaches must provide complete statistics, position-specific performance data, game-by-game breakdowns and supporting information about each player. Regional coaches then meet to discuss and rank nominees before statewide selections are finalized.
Because coaches are evaluating athletes from around the state, factors such as team success, postseason performance, strength of competition and defensive ability often help separate players with similar statistics.
No local team benefited more from that process than Ravenna.
The Bulldogs made history this spring by becoming the first Muskegon County softball program to win a state championship. Their dominance throughout the season was reflected in the all-state voting, where five players earned Division 3 First Team honors.
Junior pitcher Natalie Rosel headlined the group after completing a perfect season in the circle. She was joined by catcher Emily Postema, shortstop Reese Herremans, second baseman Riley Homoly and third baseman Sydney Morrissey, giving Ravenna one of the most heavily represented all-state groups in Michigan.
Additional area athletes earning statewide recognition included Newaygo’s Ella Luchies, Shelby’s Jayna Burmeister, Kent City’s Laynee Hoffman and Holton’s Josey Jefferies.

Girls Soccer
For soccer players, the road to all-state recognition begins at the district level. Coaches first nominate players for all-district teams before advancing candidates through regional and statewide voting. Along the way, coaches consider individual performance, team success, strength of schedule and postseason accomplishments.
Several area programs produced athletes who stood out across Division 3 and Division 4 competition.
Muskegon Western Michigan Christian led the way with six all-state selections. Goalkeeper Elaina Clapp and midfielder Allie Buchner earned Division 4 First Team honors after helping anchor another successful Warriors season. Defender Molly Visser was named Third Team All-State, while Lainey Postema, Emersyn Paling and Eve Pollock received honorable mention recognition.
North Muskegon also placed multiple athletes on the all-state teams. Emmy Creed earned First Team honors, Emma Buchmiller was selected to the Second Team, and Delaney Young landed on the Third Team. Regina McCollum and Alex Johnson added honorable mention recognition.
Other local athletes recognized statewide included Shelby’s Kylie Brown, who earned Third Team honors, along with honorable mention selections Sydney Reed and Annabelle Stark.
Division 3 honorable mention honors went to Whitehall’s Isabella Causie, Montague’s Elle Moran and Lilly Rice, Hart’s Addison Barefoot and Olivia Bradley, and Oakridge goalkeeper Alayna Weiss.

Boys Golf
Mona Shores and Western Michigan Christian represented the area on the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association all-state lists.
Mona Shores sophomore Cruz Beckstrom earned Division I All-State honors, establishing himself among the state’s elite golfers and giving the Sailors a player to watch for years to come.
Western Michigan Christian golfers Ian Vanderstelt and Zachary Weare earned Division IV All-State Honorable Mention recognition after strong seasons for the Warriors.
