Hart opens WMC Rivers girls basketball title defense with rout of shorthanded Ravenna

Senior guard Abby Hicks scores game-high 20 points for Pirates.

Ravenna scored the first basket of the game in Tuesday night’s West Michigan Conference Rivers Division girls basketball contest at Hart.

It was all Pirates after that. Abby Hicks led the way as Hart went on to a 72-24 runaway win over shorthanded Ravenna.

Hicks, a 5-foot-7 senior guard, who helped lead the Pirates to the Division 3 state semifinals at the Breslin Center last year, finished with a game-high 20 points, five rebounds, and six steals against the Bulldogs.

Hart junior Addi Hovey, a 5-11 first-team all-state jack of all trades, added 14 points, four rebounds, and five steals for Hart (2-1, 1-0 WMC Rivers).

Pirates junior Kelsey Copenhaver posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“Breslyn Porter and Abby Hicks ran the court well early on and got rewarded with transition layups,” Hart coach Travis Rosema said. “When forced to play in the half court, Hart was able to find advantages and continue to score easy baskets.

“In the second quarter, Hart continued to be aggressive defensively forcing turnovers and transition opportunities.”

No individual stats were submitted for Ravenna (0-3, 0-2 WMC Rivers), which is dealing with a rash of injuries as well as inexperience.

“In the second half, the focus (for Hart) was to remain locked in on offense and defense and finish the game strong, which the Pirates did,” Rosema said. “Overall, the Pirates got great effort from the entire team.”
