West Michigan Conference girls basketball: Roundup for Dec. 11-12, 2023

Ludington, Hart off to good starts in WMC divisional title defenses.

Tuesday featured a full night of West Michigan Conference girls basketball action, while a nonleague game was played Monday as well.

LUDINGTON 43, MONTAGUE 28: Visiting Ludington banked on its defense and grinded out a WMC Lakes Division victory over Montague.

“It was a tough game tonight against a good team,” Montague coach Jess DeBruin said. “We will use this game as a stepping stone to get us where we need to be.”

MANISTEE 63, WHITEHALL 47: Host Manistee outscored Whitehall 15-7 in the first quarter and 20-9 in the third in pulling away in this WMC Lakes Division matchup.

“Manistee did a great job running the floor and knocking down open shots,” Whitehall coach Brian Milliron said. “I was proud of the girls’ effort and fight tonight, but we just didn’t have the horsepower against a strong Manistee shooting night.”

Said Manistee coach Kenn Kott: “We played well defensively and that, in turn, helped our offense. We shot much better tonight compared to last week, so that’s also a plus. Whitehall would never go away and managed to keep the score close every time after we made a run. It’s such a competitive league.”

FREMONT 39, OAKRIDGE 18: Host Fremont picked up its first girls basketball win over Oakridge in at least 20 years, according to Packers coach Pete Zerfas. The teams were at 5 after the first quarter, but Fremont outscored Oakridge 10-0 in the second quarter to take command.

“We survived a cold-shooting night with great team defense to earn our first win (of the season),” Zerfas said.

This Friday (Dec. 15), when Oakridge hosts Orchard View, Eagles legend Sophia Wiard will have a jersey dedication in her honor during the halftime break. Wiard currently plays point guard for the University of Toledo women’s basketball team. The 2019 Oakridge alumna is the Eagles’ all-time leading scorer with 1,889 points. WMC RIVERS

HART 72, RAVENNA 24: Host Hart opened defense of its WMC Rivers Division title in runaway fashion. Ravenna scored the first basket of the game, but Hart responded and never looked back.

NORTH MUSKEGON 32, SHELBY 29: Host North Muskegon opened a challenging week with a WMC Rivers Division victory over Shelby, jumping out to a 20-11 halftime lead and holding on. The Norse host Hart, a Division 3 state semifinalist last season, in another big game Friday.

“Another great team effort,” North Muskegon coach Jill Young said. “Playing a team with a rich tradition like Shelby is such an honor and they always show up. I love the effort this Norse team gives. It’s downright inspiring because we were outsized. Our rebounding and hustle were the difference.”

HOLTON 53, HESPERIA 4: Host Holton jumped on Hesperia from the start and ran away with the WMC Rivers Division victory.

“Our press was able to give them problems in the first quarter and we got out to a 24-0 lead and put it away early,” Holton coach BJ Jordan said. “The message was, ‘It isn’t about how many we score, but how many we give up and can we play with the same defensive intensity when we’re not pressing up big late in the game?’

“It’s easy to coast on ‘D’ when you’re up big. I thought we did a decent job of keeping our intensity up the entire game. Many girls contributed for us and almost everyone got in the scorebook, which is always nice.”
